I don't think you need a fig tree there, it seems it more in the way than a better esthetic. I would also Id probably bring the shears back, longer, and hung above the window on a single rod. and add a chandelier. doesn't need much, a little softness and a little light.

How about an accent color on the walls and a pendant light?

RL Relocation, do you have a suggestion for a light fixture? Would you suggest a repeat of the dining room chandelier or go in a different, more modern direction? There are so many choices, it's hard to narrow down between style and finish. Part of me wants to just do a simple linen drum shade pendant and call it a day...But I also love the big brass domes like this one, from Crate & Barrel

Definitely a light. I’d consider wallpaper. I think it would add the texture element and the soothing piece that your looking for. As far as the dining room. I think I’d move the chairs you currently have to the sides and add new head chairs. Or something. It just seems very empty. And non intentional. I agree regarding the sheers. They should be hung like your dining curtains.
