Weird addition to the loft - makes open staircase seem weird

What do I do with this space...? I feel like it needs something. It was an add on to the bedroom upstairs and they left it open with dry wall pillars... boxy posts.....not sure what they are. I appreciate they make the house more open. But visually I think they are awkward.
