Another rug question

Does anyone know what this type of pattern is called? I love it. I would like to find something similar but in a dark gray/charcoal color.

I’m sure IRL there’s more color in the rug, but my first impression is that it’s two colors, and an almost primitive (colonial, as Mtn said?) pattern. I think it’s the combo of a starlike shape and the other shapes that I’m drawn to. I don’t know but it’s unique and I‘m currently thinking I want a dark gray/charcoal rug with the sofa I just ordered. I’ve got plenty of time because built-ins aren’t being done for a month or so yet, and the sofa is going to take 19-21 WEEKS to arrive!! What the. 🤨

Mtn, you found a few of the same rugs I found in my online searching.

The fabric is a tad lighter IRL and it’s the softest velvety chenille, so cozy.

This den is next to our master bedroom so I’m trying to treat it almost as an extension of our room, with a similar color scheme. Our room has a darker green rug, “blush” bedding, and this wallpaper on one wall.

So I’m thinking a mostly dark gray rug, and some pillows that have gray, green, pink. The rugs in other rooms upstairs are very colorful and patterned so I’m thinking less color in this rug and a simpler pattern....

Hoping I’ll find a rug in a local store but I was hoping to find a name for the style of that rug so I could look for similar ones online too.

I love your green sofa! I saw this, but is too bold of a pattern?

Oh that’s pretty but not quite what I had in mind.

    I like both of these.

    Oh, I like those!

Sue, I googled “gray, green, coral rug“ and all these came up under Wayfair of all places. I don’t know exactly what you are looking for but some of

these would be quite nice adjacent to your bedroom decor.

I really like the next to last one with your sofa color. Many of the greens skew to lime or chartreuse.

It looks like a pattern wall to wall carpeting cut and bound rather than a throw rug you order and buy. Check with a local carpet shop to see if they have a pattern rug similar to it.,

Roarah, I wondered about that too. We have a carpet store nearby that does great area rugs from remnants. I will visit them at some point.

Thanks for all the other suggestions, kswl and JT and Arapaho.

Love your green sofa. And the one just terrilyn posted would look fabulous in your room.

I like Terri‘s rug too, and some of the others posted by kswl and Oakley, jinx, Arapaho...sorry if I’m forgetting anyone but I have looked at and appreciated all the suggestions.

However, what I like about the original rug I posted is the dark, graphic look. I don’t want color, I really just want charcoal/gray.

    Inspiration rug:

And the closest look I’ve found so far:

This is interesting but kind of looks like olives to me:

Sorry to have dragged you all down my rabbit hole...originally I was just hoping someone would have a name for the type of rug in that photo. So far I guess we could call it “elusive”?

    Few more...

Those are nice Sue, thought I would throw some trees into the mix. This is more of a brown/gray though from Rugsource . Com

Just another two cents..... we had a Kalaty wool rug in the foyer of our old house and it did not wear very well. Fwiw.

I think the second Kalaty is very close to your inspiration design. I am not sure if you liked the room or only the rug, because personally I think the colors are very much the reason the room works, so, in that case, I'd stick with a very mossy green and a rich brown.

I think it ties very nicely w the lovely "Morris" wall paper too, eg

    Versus:

I know they aren't in the same room, so it kind of overstates things, but just a thought. Oh and I want you to take a wall down or make an arch there anyway, or maybe a french door/s between the two rooms. : ) Just giving you a heads up on that.

    Sueb20 thanked mtnrdredux_gw

Well mtn, the French doors would have to go on the only wall that our headboard can go on...and on the other side, the only wall that the sofa can go on, so...your plan is nixed.

I’m not trying to emulate that room at all, just liked the pattern in the rug.

Thank you, kswl, that’s good info.

What color is in your wallpaper, brown or gray?

    It’s black.

    last modified: 5 years ago

Just to be clear, the wallpaper is not in the room I’m working on. It’s the room next door.

Yes, I realize the wallpaper is in the bedroom but you said you wanted them too coordinate. The reason I asked is because I can't picture the green sofa with a gray rug. I think brown would work (as in your inspo pic). But these are not colors I use, so what do I know?? Your rooms always look fab, so I'm sure whatever you end up with will look great!

Ok yeah, that makes sense. I think the 2nd Kalaty from the last post really nails the mood of your inspiration rug. If it is upstairs in a secondary room maybe wear is less an issue that a rug used in a foyer?

Maybe its too dark tho? The "olive" one is a pretty color. and it is different!

Here’s a highly professional depiction of the basic color scheme I’m going for.

Top is a potential pillow (not really considering this exact pillow but it’s got the right colors.)

Well Sue, this was a very fun challenge but I must admit defeat. From the looks of your last post you are getting it together nicely.

I did find this rug that I like but do think it’s not dark enough for you.

I like that rug! My concern with a rug with a lot of green in it would be that it’s the “wrong” green. The sofa is kind of a weird green. Not really sage, not mint, etc...

But thank you for participating in my rug search! As I said earlier, I’ve got lots of time, so eventually I’ll look in a couple local stores and hopefully find something there.

@Sueb20, From whom are you ordering your sectional? The color is a lot like the sectional DD wants to order from interiordefine, but I believe you will have done more research than her and I am weary of her ordering such a large purchase online.

Crate and Barrel (and I did go to the store and sit on it! — and brought fabric samples home). It’s very deep, deeper than I would like for a living room sofa, but great for curling up to watch movies.

    @Sueb20 Thank you!

First one! I think that color green is tricky to pair. Plus i think the first one is more "you." You like color, and whimsy and fun.

In your inspiration photo, both the sofa color and the rug are very different than what you show in your second option. Generally brown and green would not send me, but they are great in the inspiration because of the particular shades. Don't care for the green on your sofa with grey/black

Hmm, the post I am responding to is gone?

Jterri, that Batik rug is gorgeous, and i think you did an amazing job of capturing the feel and tone of the inspiration.

Aggghh this site! somehow it looked like I had posted twice, so I deleted one, and now both are gone?

Trying again. I’ve narrowed down to two:

    OR

Mtn, I’m not trying to recreate the look in the inspo pic — only the general pattern of the rug.

PS also this isn’t my exact sofa color! Just a reasonable facsimile.

    last modified: 5 years ago

Sorry! I should be disqualified because I am just not loving green with black/grey.

Also, in re the "fun rug" I'd really want to take in a pillow to see how it looks. The precise shade of green can make it or break it with so much going on in that rug

Yes, I know — I’m actually seeing the bluish-green of the sofa in that rug I THINK. The rug is online but they have free returns...

Yes, in the close up I think I see a close green, too

In related news, here is the skeleton of the built-ins that are being installed in this room! Going in today.

Sue, weeks ago, on a whim, I ordered the back issue of HB to see if a resource guide might list rug source (I loved that room too). No luck, nothing. Photos were even smaller in print.

Curious, and forgive me if I missed it... did you ever say what color your green sectional room is painted ?

    Sueb20 thanked Arapaho-Rd

Curious, why are you making a den upstairs when you have one downstairs? Surfeit of empty BR? Love to see what you do with the top left corner built in, LOL!?

We aren’t making a den; it’s always been a den (even for the PO). Just getting new sofa/rug and adding shelving. We have a small TV in the living room but the “big” TV — which isn’t really big — is in this room.

Arapaho, I think the walls are Muslin. Or something similarly beigey.

The triangular shelf space has been a topic of conversation between builder and me! He‘s done a lot of work for us over the years — we’ve gotten to be friends — he keeps asking if I’ve decided what I’m putting there. (I am sure I have some weird little thing that will fit!)

Here‘s a messy pic of the wall that’s getting the shelves. Looks like a used pillow sale.

I like the before! recognize that throw too : )

I ordered the Wm Morris rug today! And here’s the current status of the room (it was supposed to get done while we were away last week...oh well).

Love it. And I'm excited about the rug!
