Help for 80's bathroom!

We are buying a Manhattan coop. The guest bath looks like an assisted living facility and a showcase for Duran Duran posters. I want cosmetic changes to last a few years to delay a full renovation. Can I tone down the harsh black and white vibe with just a new look from the black tile and up plus a shower curtain?

Goals:

* Keep original 1938 floors. (Love!)

* Keep black tile (think painting the tile may look sloppy)

* New mirror and light above mirror (there is a receptacle behind mirror, walls and ceiling are plaster so don't want to rewire for sconces.)

* Shower curtain (cover up the crazy view of the shower, there is no curtain or door on there now?!?)*

Gil Schaffer and Ralph Lauren are some of my inspirations. I have a beautiful medium wood vertical rectangular mirror I could hang.

Here it is...

80’s? People are doing that bathroom now!

I wouldnt change much of anything in that bathroom, except, I agree, a shower curtain certainly is needed. The mirror that is already there, looks better than the one in your inspiration picture.

That’s a great bathroom! I would not put a wood framed mirror in there.

It's very accessible, and has all these handles(that might come very handy), that might be influencing the feeling you get. I think it's one great bathroom, and agree that the mirror that is there works very well with it. It's not that you can't switch, you can, of course-but wouldn't go for wood there.

They probably took the curtain off for showings. So, a shower curtain for sure..and-as a suggestion-maybe a hint of paint will make it less harsh for you? Something like shade of pale pink, or a blue you love? And then art can be anything, really. I think all this, and shower curtain, might soften the look. I think even a shower curtain alone will soften the look.

    Congratulations of your new place!

@Jessica, sorry to disappoint. Something about this bathroom reminds me of the Rio album cover and makes me feel like Tom Petty could jump out of the shower. I can't believe anyone is installing bathrooms that look like this now a days. This one is 10+ years old or more. I'm still stumped about how to change the harsh look of this without a wrecking ball.

I quite like your bathroom but unfortunately you do not. Have you already used the shower ? Does water spray outside the shower area? It shouldn’t if it is a well designed accessible shower. I loathe germy shower curtains so would be delighted to have a space which did not require one.

You could emphasize the black and white color scheme with edgy black and white photographs on the wall.

I like the bathroom. I would put in “softer” feeling wall decor. The framed artwork i see in the photo makes me think of the 80s, with the harsher lines et al.

Kendrah - I should have added that I was smiling the whole time. You are spot on with the Rio album. Maybe just frame and hang an album cover, embracing the Duran Duran theme and call it a day! (LOL). I should have explained I was expecting a much “worse” bathroom. It’s bold for sure! (Now I can’t get “Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand...” out of my head!)

Hi - NYC person here and I can see why you don’t like that bathroom and why it’s hard for others to see from the picture. I used to have that exact tile floor in old apartment and it’s great, but it’s more of a matte tile and the wall tiles are a glossy black that don’t go with it all (I think that and the sink/mirror are what’s giving you the Duran Duran vibe). I wouldn’t spend much money in there until you’re ready to do the whole thing.

Accidentally hit send too soon. I think a shower curtain will go a long way to cover up a lot of the tile.

I actually like this bathroom! Maybe a glass door instead of a shower curtain.

I personally love it. I’d move in and live with it for awhile - it may grow on you. If it doesn’t then really the only way around it is a full gut.

Has anyone had experience with having wall tile professionally reglazed? I'm thinking that changing the wall color - both tiles and painted portion, getting a new, more classic sink and a new light and mirror - plus shower curtain may be what I should do.

This will be my first time living in NYC. I'm overwhelmed by what is involved in gutting a bathroom in a coop - the cost, the permits, all of it. I'm now leaning to wanting to find a cosmetic fix perhaps instead of gutting.

I'm amazed how many people like this bathroom. Val B, I think you nailed it on the mat finish and glossy black tile. I'd love to have work done on this prior to moving in. I already know I don't like it. I don't think living with it is going to change that.
