Not tacky, but the opposite.

It's for a formal setting and a big space, preferably with other classical-motif architectural elements.

It doesn't belong with the wrought iron banister—which tends towards the exactly-not-classical, namely pre-Raphaelite—and it's quite squat for its diameter, so it might not be compatible with a high-ceilinged foyer.

Also..... is the mini-Cornithian column papier mâché or plaster? Real marble would work a whole lot better with those marble floors. It doesn't have the heft, the interest, or the jewel-like character of honed marble.

If I were doing a plant stand in that space, I think I'd do wrought iron. Or else maybe a Louis Quatorze or Empire hall table with a gigantic vase bursting with flowers. A tad fussy, but not baroque.

If you'd still like to do a column, I'd go a slender ionic with simple volutes, not palmettos.

@jenniferKaczor I do think you have the right idea going with something significant to balance out the marble and match the scale of the hall.

Where is that? Lovely floor, all cut purposely to show the rich and unique veins in the marble. and those VERY precise shapes.... The veins go all in one direction on all the fawn marble pieces, and all the green is blotchy. Magnifique!
