Quartz Countertop Disaster - Installer Damage with Acetone

Hi, has anyone had to have their new kitchen countertops repaired or replaced due to damage from the installer by using acetone? My new Viatera quartz countertops were installed last Thursday and the installer not only used acetone to clean up the glue, but left the gallon can of acetone on the countertop while he was doing other things. I am beside myself and have alerted the company I purchased it from. They are sending someone out tomorrow to look at it and they've said it can be repaired. From what I've read, this is a mess and doesn't fix the problem. Has anyone had this happen to them and did you get a resolution? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, just to let you all know, the installer could not get the acetone stain out of the countertop. He buffed it for an hour and little change. Fortunately, the vendor replaced the damaged section of the countertop.

Hi, for lack of a better word there’s a “water” mark. I was told by the installer not to wipe the countertop down for a couple hours after they left. Hopefully you’ll be able to see the “cloudiness” and can imprint in the attached pics.

That doesn't look like acetone damage to me. Acetone has to dwell on estone for hours to do damage.

I'd hit that with a Quartz Renew kit before I replaced the top were I the fabricator.

Hi Joe, that was the only chemical that I witnessed them using and there’s a clear outline in 3 spots of the gallon can.

This is currently happening to me and I am so upset… the installers used acetone and it left cloudy marks. They came back to “fix” it and made matters worse… now, the installer is refusing to take responsibility and wants to file a warranty claim. I am at a loss for how to handle this. Here is one of the several spots they caused damage to.

I am a fabricator. To my knowledge all the engineered stone (i.e."quartz") manufacturers do not recommend the use of acetone so that would be my 1st question. 2nd'ly; there is normally no reason to use acetone to clean up quartz tops at install. Either way you have every right to demand the supplier give you undamaged tops. It should also be done promptly (like within a few days or maybe a week.)

That looks more like mechanical damage than acetone to me. See the 4" inner circle? That's where someone set a polisher. The halo around is where they tried to buff it out.

I've used acetone on estone regularly and have never caused any damage.

Thank you. They definitely did not touch it with a polisher… they came inside with it, but my husband wouldn’t allow them to use it. They used paper towels with acetone and rubbed circles around the spot for 20 minutes. Damaged by hand. The hanstone warranty specifically states “NEVER use acetone on the quartz”. (We know that now but didn’t know that before they ruined the stone)
