Extremely easy to grow from cuttings if you know someone with a shrub. Not sure how it would like a hot dry climate though. Does it grow happily in your area?

don't know anyone with it. I believe where I live it would be a shade-loving shrub.

It is native to the west coast as far south as central California. But limited to the coastal areas. Sacramento or the Central Valley may be a bit intense for it, although the Sunset Western Garden book lists it as suitable for that area.

They sell it at a nursery in my area in SoCal. I also recall it being sold from Annie's Annuals & Perennials. Went and found the link: Search Results For "ribes" - Annie's Annuals

Annies Annuals and Digging Dog are walk-in and mail order nurseries. What you need to know is that their plants are sold in 4" pots. I buy tons of plants from both, but you should be aware of what size you're getting. I know that Sloat carries Ribes sanguineum here in the bay area in one gallon and 5 gallon, so you might be able to drive down to the closest Sloat to you in Concord and pick one up. Yerba Buena Nursery and Las Pilitas Nursery carry Ribes. You could mail order from them or call them and find out if they know a supplier in Sacramento. One final thought: if you live in Sacramento and the plant will be in full sun, Ribes malvaceum would be more appropriate. 'Dancing Tassels' is a beautiful cultivar. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip on 'Dancing Tassels'. I'm in the plan phase this year while I wait for the designer to be available. Part of the yard (the less challenging side) I hope to do most of the plant design so am making my lists and thinking about my goals.

Look at photos of the mature leaves as the summer aspect of Ribes sanguineum is pretty lacking - in a garden setting it might be best located where it can be found and enjoyed in bloom but is not conspicuous at other times.

I'm thinking to plant it in a partial/dappled shade mixed shrub/perennial bed in the side of our very wide front yard. But I'll check out the summer foliage just to be sure.

I see them on the Monrovia website. Green Acres shows up as a dealer of Monrovia plants. That usually means if you ask they can get it for you even if they do not stock it.

I live in Walnut Creek—my climate is almost as hot and dry as yours in Sacramento. I have had ribes sanguineum in my yard for 7 or 8 years. It takes a fair amount of sun but is happier with shade during the hottest part of the day. I had a problem with my irrigation last year and had to resort to overhead sprinklers, and now I have lots of baby ribes volunteers.

Debbie do you have any photos of September-ish foliage? It seems like that's when our plants are looking their most wiped out (but it's still pretty much summer until end of October). If I plant ribes, it will be in a mixed bed in the front yard so I do hope for it to not be a complete eyesore.
