To edge joint boards, do the boards have to be all the same width?

I’m trying to get to a width of 18 inches. Ideally I’d like to get just one board but the widest they come are 12 inches in my area.

Its for diy portable near infrared sauna. Pretty much a board with 4 - 250 W near infrared bulbs spread out. Behind I’ll have the wiring covered. I’d use plywood but I’m trying to avoid any wood with adhesives or possible toxic off gassing. So I would prefer to glue less boards together to make a 18 inch wide board. The best non toxic board I was recommended is poplar.

Even 12" (real width is 11.75") on a single board is pushing it, likely to cup or twist. Your options are dowel, biscuit or Kreg screw joints. Tongue and groove could be a possible solution also. No the boards don't have to be the same width for joining purposes.

As Raye pointed out the various joint options, I would use something like a Titebond wood glue (or similar) with all of them. (No, I don't know the VOC properties of Titebond.) Once assembled, I would suggest pre-baking the assembly in an open area to get any VOC's baked out and gone prior to use.
