Cover ugly flashing

We replaced a tile roof with asphalt shingles. We didn't know that the roofers would replace the metal flashing that was behind the stucco with a big piece of shiny metal flashing on the outside of the stucco. It's a real eyesore. The roofer said to just paint it the color of the house, but 1. We weren't planning on painting the white stucco and new paint will stick out 2. It will still show I think even if it's painted white like the house. We are planning on replacing all the awful orange trim with a soft black. We would love any suggestions on making the flashing look nice. TIA

Yes, paint it to match the stucco when you get the trim repainted if you think they did a good job on the roof overall. It will be quick even with a metal-compatible primer and a couple coats of paint on the triangular area above the garage. Or match the gray of the roof. You could also paint the garage door and surrounding stucco with white paint that matches the current house color.

If that seems like pulling a string that starts to unravel a sweater, consider that homeowners often have to touch up trim or repaint the side of the house that gets the most sun exposure at least once between complete repainting of the whole house.

I agree, get a good metal primer and match the white of the stucco and paint the metal, that white paint, and also put a coat on the stucco in the gable part. No need to paint the entire thing, although, like apple pie order above, I think the garage door could be white too.

Thank you so much for your responses. Painting it white is the solution then. Maybe I could texturize it? The garage door is definitely getting painted white and I'm going to add black wrought iron hinges/handles for decorative purposes. My aim is to eradicate every bit of orange on the house.

You could texture it to match the stucco, but, you would need to primer it first, with a good quality metal primer. Then, you would need to reprime the texturing, before painting.

If you paint it, it's always going to be rippled like it is now. I would purchase a piece of composite siding trim and attach it to the face of the flashing.

They sell this stuff at Lowes and HD.

Joseph, I mentioned something like that to the roofer & he said they don't do that, I would have to hire someone. It's really tough right now to find contractors. Maybe something to keep on the list.

Beverly, my husband mentioned doing this. Darn, I hate when he's right ;) Maybe even paint it the same color as the trim.

Posting to this forum has been a great experience. We've gutted the inside of the house ourselves (Home Depot tool rental, youtube videos, and friends). Three months in and still can't get a licensed, capable contractor. I have a feeling I will be posting a lot of questions. Thank you all!

Be thankful the roofer was competent enough to put flashing. It is needed, and most recommend stucco leave 2" of flashing exposed above the shingles. Usually, the stucco should be repaired by overlapping this flashing, but that is not the roofer's job.

Our roofer is wonderful-this is the second roof he's done for us, plus the roofs of a condo complex where we have a unit. We replaced a barrel tile roof with shingle. The tile obviously has a much higher profile, so there are some things that we were surprised by and that need to be addressed. We never noticed the flashing behind the barrel tile until the tiles were removed. I think a piece of composite trim, filling the gaps in the corners, and painting all of the orange will make everything better.
