Trying to balance awkward corner after tree removal

Trying to figure out how to balance this awkward corner in my garden. Faces southwest.

I had to take out a big gorgeous redbud tree in that left corner after it split for the third time. I am lost without it. I can't plant another big tree there because the huge stump is there and no you can't get in there to grind it out. I removed the lilac and put in a gate where the wheelbarrow is standing now but it didn't help. I can only think about putting a huge conical or spiral evergreen in a pot on top of the stump. The width of the area was too narrow for two pathways and too wide for one so I am going to put in a row of stepping stones to fascilitate weeding and watering. So should I put in three separate rows of plants running parallel to the fence, taller in back, shorter in front or plant it up random cottage garden style. I thought I might put two pots with maybe topiaries or flowers on either side of the gate. I've been working on it for two years now and it's time to plant but what?

I can only think about putting a huge conical or spiral evergreen in a pot on top of the stump.

==>>> in z5 .. it might be hard to overwinter a tree or conifer.. in a pot .. but i dont know WV .... is it the mild z5.. or the mean z5 ... unless the pot is small enough.. over the years.. to dolly into the garage or some such ...

i cant tell where the stump is in these pix ...

what are the shrubs to the left of the new gate ...

you are using a lot of path space ... is there a reason the paths need be so wide??? .. or so formal.. with the wood edging .... you might want to .. in the future.. soften all the straight lines by making it more of a garden path ... rather than a dirt sidewalk ... i dont know.. just thinking about it ... or maybe.. if you have one.. a pic of the garden in full summer growth ...

but i digress ... are you sure you wnat to mess with pots????

look into thuja de groots spire.. for inground tall thin evergreen conifers ... you would need to insure single leader .. no snow or ice load issues ... but it could give you the vertical you are looking for ...

Does your property extend beyond the back fence, thru the gate?

Was the lilac you removed the large shrub with the white flowers?

I think it's still possible to plant another tree in the area if you locate it to the right or in front of the stump. But, like Ken, I'm not sure where the stump is.

Another option for the corner is an arbor.
