(1) 92W x 80H sliding patio door

(2) 44W x 65H picture over awning

(3) 16W x 80H picture

(2) 55W x 49H twin casement

(2) 55W x 37H twin casement

Can anyone tell me if this is a decent price?

Mostly an impossible question to answer, without more details. What kind of window is coming out?

    last modified: 5 years ago

Same size / style are coming out - wood framed wood windows. House built in the 80's - vertical cedar siding. I believe the windows are original. The old windows should come out easily. I will be removing the interior trim and reinstalling myself.

The Sunrise are full frame replacements.

Here is more details from the quote.

    STANDARD 7/8" IG

    Glass Group{STANDARD GLASS}

    Standard Glass Pkg{N2100A}

    GLASS BRAND=[Ultra U Plus]

    NO NAILING FIN BRICKMOLD

    STANDARD HARDWARE

Thank you! The company has a solid reputation, great reviews, and does a 1 year post install window checkup and a written lifetime warranty on craftsmanship.

+1. Still variables involved, but that sounds like its in the normal range for full frames and that product

Thanks. What do you guys think of the Sunrise casement? Worth the money?

The best bet would be able to compare competite bids. Why are you taking off and putting trim on?

The Sunrise casement is one of the best vinyl casements on the market IMO. Very attractive and designed well.

Hi Todd, the trim will be replaced with new due to style/color so it matches new trim in rest of house and I will be handling that myself. I am working on getting a few more bids and will post when received. Thank you.

+2 on their casement being one of the absolute best vinyl casements as HomeSealed mentioned.

Thanks guys. I just had a Pella guy say his window will make their over priced builder grade junk look silly :)

Now that is funny. Typical Pella nonsense but funny none the less.

I went back to the company who provided the quote and asked for a price breakdown - they said the cant do that. I also asked to change one of the 55W x 49H twin casements into a 9ftx4ft triple casement which would involve expanding the RO and also for an additional window so additional new RO and they said they just decided they are not doing permit work (creating or changing existing openings) currently and for the foreseeable future and will only be installing for like. They will however install into an opening if I provide. I'm not sure why they would turn away additional work and $$. I will most likely pass on these guys because they cant give me what I am looking for but will post pricing from the next asap. Thank you all!

A lot of window companies wont do framing and your going to probably get the same answer. Even though it may seem simple there is a lot work and Time involved with that. You may have to lower your windows to get a header for that span.

Thanks Todd. Is it normal for a company to provide the total cost and refuse to provide a breakdown? I was looking for cost of each window so I could remove if needed to tweak the price as well as window/labor breakdown. I would have been ok with a cost per window installed price but they wouldn't even do that.

I would just just ask them to give you a new price with items you wanted removed. It is normal either way. I will break down prices if needed but keep The labor and material cost together.

Most companies dont break down labor and window cost because its sold as a package.

Thats like asking Ford or GM to break down the cost of materials and labor for a vehicle.

"I went back to the company who provided the quote and asked for a price breakdown - they said the cant do that."

I can do it, but never do.

"Is it normal for a company to provide the total cost and refuse to provide a breakdown?"

Yes. A contractor's labor, material, overhead, and profit are absolutely none of your business. Customers who ask go on double secret probation. Those that insist get their deposit back.

Thanks Joseph. I guess its best not to ask to avoid secret probation :)

Hi guys - can anyone tell me the rules for tempered glass? If the bathroom window is not inside the shower/tub enclosure and bottom of window is 44" from floor does it need to be tempered?

And for other windows they just need to by more than 18" from floor? Anything lower requires tempered?

    Thank you!

A lot of municipalities are now requiring tempered glass for any window that is in a “wet area”. As a result, any window in a bathroom is getting tempered here.

As to the contractor not taking on framing jobs, I relate. We are so backed up on window installations right now, that it doesn’t make sense to take on jobs that eat up too much time as it just exacerbates the problem. I’ve turned down several similar jobs in the past couple of weeks as well.

While asking the contractor to separate labor and materials is a no-no, I don’t have any problem itemizing the quote by window, so that the customer can see the installed price of each window. Not sure if that’s what you were asking for or not though.

You can google IRC tempered glass to find a general outline, however as Ultra alluded to you may have state or local requirements that differ. The Wisconsin code for instance doesn't require it within 18" of the floor (most here do it anyway as its best practice), however many municipalities do, along with other slight differences. Best thing to do is contact your local building dept.

On itemization, I agree with the other sentiments. "Capital improvements" are an installed package. Trying to deconstruct and analyze pricing can lead down a rabbit hole of confusion as companies can build their pricing differently from one to the next. Even if the guy doesn't break down his quote window by window, I'm sure he wouldn't have a problem quoting you a couple of ways to get the info that you are looking for.

At the end of the day when it comes to pricing, I always suggest looking at the final, complete price for that scope of work and use that for value/comparison purposes.

This sums it up unless your city, state or other entity has stricter rules . The stringent rule / code trumps.

There are many exceptions to the rules and I use them all.

The more stringent rule does not always trump, the rule of the local municipality (or whomever will enforce the rule) does even if less stringent. Personally, I strongly prefer the more stringent rule to avoid any future issues or liability, in addition to doing right by my customers on the issue of safety, however there are exceptions to any rule.

How does sunrise casement compare to andersen 100 casement in regard to cost and performance?

  • PRO

Id say the 100 is typically cheaper, but price can vary from dealer to dealer. I think they are fairly close in performance When ordered with the same glass pack. They have a different Look so I would recommend looking at them both in person.

Thanks. I like the look of the 100 series - I think its more modern. I am waiting on pricing from local lumber yard.

    Hi Jimmy and All,

Hope it's ok to add to this thread related to Sunrise windows.

I had 3 2 wide double hung Sunrise windows installed in my basement a couple years ago in preparation for finishing the basement (I have an English basement). These were not named Verde/Vanguard/etc, line. I was told by this windows contractor that these are the same windows with certain minimum specifications and allows certain companies to be authorized for these named lines. These were not Sunrise lower line (can't recall Essentials or something??).

I'm now looking to replace some of the original builder's grade vinyl windows in the upstairs - focusing on those that seem to have issues. I'm looking at these same windows with this same company (they also replaced/enlarged my kitchen window w/ Marvin).

The related window specs I see are:

"Install (3) two wide double hungs with 3/2 georgian style contour grills between glass Sunrise windows. Interior color white. Exterior color white. Windows include urethane foam filled frame with 7R value rating. Windows include white hardware and half extruded aluminum screens with fiberglass screening. Windows include Low E N2201A Ultra U Plus coating with argon glass filled air space exceeding energy start requirements. Doublehung windows include two locks over 26" wide. Window frame and sash include contoured appearance. window frame and sash allow for 27% more glass space than standard vinyl window. Doublehungs tilt easy to clean. Air filtration rating .02."

Are there any other specifications I should be looking for? Should I find out what the exact Sunrise line is? These do all have lifetime warranty.

    Thanks!
