interior paint help

I am painting the interior of my home gray Mist. I am looking to paint the shelves along the curved staircase a darker gray. Wondering if that will be too bold? What would be a good contrast to paint them?

Don’t think I’d highlight them. Personally, I would wall them in.

You mean kind of like how it is now, with two tones? Would you repeat that tone on the other wall as well? If you did do it, I would not go too dark.

so if i wall them in and don't do the 2 tone, i am worried it will be overwhelming grey. grey mist is light but i guess i was trying to follow the 2 tone with 2 different greys. so does walling them in make it too much grey? one color everywhere?

I think I would wall it up too. it's a dust collector and I wouldn't want to add that to my to do list. Everyone using the stairs will see it. If you like grey must then use it everywhere. Do the two tone later if it bugs you. I presumably think it'll look cleaner and better with one tone. What brand paint are you thinking of using? If you're concerned about grey have you looked at grey colors with a beige in it also?

I hasten to add, there are a lot of really good designers on here that can help you with color if you're not sure. I'm still talking because it bumps up your post to the top of the line :) Good luck! Your home looks nice!

Try tagging 'design' or color, on your post if that's an option?

I would keep what you have, but, I would not do the two tone. Keep it all the gray mist. It will blend it all in together. I do like the shelves, and think they add a bit to your room.

I would do it all one color. That's the "current" way to do things... just create a subtle backdrop and focus on art/furniture for more color.

Are there other ways to do things? Of course. But if you want to "highlight" that feature, you should ask yourself, "What is so important about this feature that I want to highlight it?"

Look, I have lived in (and still do) tract homes. These builders make all sorts of "interesting features". Our old house had a 5' by 3' promontory, near the top of the stairs, which stuck out over the living room for no earthly reason. What do you put there? Yeah, we put nothing there.

I think those kind of things, like mine and yours, are actually dangerous because children are tempted to climb and rappel. Yes, your kids or future kids living there might be super obedient and careful not to do such things, but there's no accounting for visiting kids/friends.

So, if all you want to know about is paint, I'd agree with others, don't highlight it. Let it blend in as much as is possible under the circumstances.
