I think your house is charming. I live in MA and lots of houses like yours in my area. House numbers could go on the column or on the stair riser. Does the PO require the mailbox be down by the sidewalk? In my neighborhood when a new owner purchases a home the box has to be moved to sidewalk so mailperson does not have to get out of the truck.

I think a yellow door would be nice. Do you have any color preferences? Your siding color is pretty neutral providing lots of options.

Curved beds, perhaps. Squiggly beds, no.

The color isn't my favorite, but I suspect with a bright color on the door and a pair of matching chairs on the porch, the "blah" will be significantly reduced. I'd choose a rich blue.

How long have you had the house? If you just bought it, you need to figure out what your landscaping is. My front-of-house gardens are heavy on perennials that aren't visible now because snow on the roof occasionally freezes, then slides of the roof and damages shrubs.

Check with the local post office to find out their rules for your mailbox, and with the local emergency management people for their rules for your house numbers.

In the old days, people used to paint their door red in clebration of having paid off their mortgage. I black door would look nice too..

I would do a climber up the railing on the sides of your porch so you don't see you neighbors car when she is parked in her driveway, Clematis, Bathsheba rose, climbing hydrangea.

I agree on checking with the PO on box placement. Also, the USPS site lists specs. It has to be an approved box at an approved height, etc.

I just went through this myself. Some more considerations:

1. If you plan on getting small-package mail order deliveries, get a BIG box so you don't have to drive somewhere to pick them up.

2. If theft is a problem in your neighborhood, consider a locked box.

3. Check where snowplows dump snow. You do NOT want to put your box in that spot.

4. Ask the mail deliverer where s/he would like the box.

5. You can buy the whole post thingy already assembled in Home Depot's LUMBER department. Unless you want a fancy one; those are in the mailbox department.

I made the mistake of buying brass numbers. Unfortunately, they reflect the house paint color, so you can't see the numbers at all. I have just the cheap-o numbers now, on both sides of the mailbox and by my front door. The priority point of the numbers is for emergency vehicles to see your house quickly.
