Question on leaf size and other plant questions.

I thought I'd start a new thread as opposed to cluttering up the other ones with different subjects. The question concerns lacanosa. Do these plants come in different varieties whereby the leaves are different sizes? My plant seems to have very small leaves, maybe 1 - 1.5". It blooms well, but the leaves are small. The other pics I've seen on the web whenever a lacanosa is shown, the leaves appear to be 2-3" long. different type? I've included a few pics for clarification.

The broken stick in the top center is only there so I can attach a clamp and not damage the vine.

another view - this is as large as the leaves seem to grow

and here she is with two blooms open today - there's a multiflora in the back blooming too.

Others who know the plant better can speak to any additional cultivars of the species, but there are a number of factors that can limit leaf size on plants. Low fertility - particularly a N deficiency, light levels at the upper limit of what the plant is genetically programmed to tolerate, root congestion or poor root health, cool temperatures, can act individually or in concert to limit leaf size. Also, as the number of leaves on a plant increases, leaf size of containerized plants generally decreases; and, full or partial defoliation, whether it's intentional or not, will limit size of immature and/or new leaves.

The plant is considered drought tolerant, so avoid over-watering. Do you allow the plant to sit in water that exits the drain and makes its way into the collection saucer? Ideally, the soil mass would be completely isolated from the effluent which ends up in the saucer.

Tapia - thanks. My lacanosa likes to be watered more often than some of my other hoyas. I keep her soil damp, and it doesn't seem to mind. One thing you did mention however was the soil and pot size. I was thinking of repotting her up one size pot because she's been residing in this little pot for over a year and the mix isn't very good (it was some sort of cactus soil with pearlite and was already potted when the cuttings came to me). Once the weather warms up somewhat, I'll take her outside and repot into a slightly large pot, but one with lots of chunky orchid mix in it. She also gets fed, now that she's woken up from her winter nap, every other week with a very dilute dyna-gro solution which I mix up.

If there are lacanosas out there with larger leaves, I'd love to get my hands on one just to grow it out more. I would think the flowers are also larger in size, which translates to more fragrance too. This one however is very fragrant (when the sun shines on it) so I can't begin to imagine what a larger plant with dozens of flowers open would smell like. I'm sure the entire room will be filled with her perfume.

    Thanks for the help....

You're welcome. Does it really smell like cinnamon?

It smells more like hyacinth than anything else.

Bill, there is the Lacunosa 'giant' which has bigger leaves. Not sure if it is easy to gain access to though just like all the other strange ones we like and want)

At some point Mike - I'd love to get a few small cuttings. I am attempting to increase my collection this year since I only have the relatively common hoyas. I do have andersonii that I can propagate for you, and some micans and cebu blue which I've started in leca and they are ready to be transplanted. Should you ever wish to try your hand at those, let me know and I'll ship some to you.

Thanks Mike, but I already have more plants than I can comfortably care for ...... and I didn't see a text from you/mom.

I beg a pardon for the OT cross-talk, Bill.

Tapia - no problem at all - it's an open forum and the more the merrier. Everyone's conversation is welcome. This is how we learn - the free exchange of ideas.

Bill, that sounds like a plan my friend. I will be starting a simple thread on wanting to see everyone's Lacunosa plants soon)))

I have had this question about lacunosa for a while myself. I did find a very old thread in the hoyas forum where some of the leaf size variation was discussed. I presented this picture of a NOID hoya my friend had that I was trying to determine if it was khroniana or lacunosa. The smaller leaves reminded me of khroniana, but the same plant had longer leaves more like the lacunosas I have seen. My friend's plant:

He gave me a cutting which I am now growing and it looks like this (below). All the leaves are small, compact.

I did have two of the large hanging basket lacunosas from Costa Farms. Both had the big long leaves. Both have since bit the dust. I couldn't keep them alive.

    Mike,

What are the chances if I may ask for some Lacunosa Cuttings? I literally just got back from a nursery and found myself a Hoya... but it was still wrapped in paper with no label.. about to post a picture of it in a new post :)

If I have enough to cut back in summer, why not? Just have to remind me when I let everyone know that I trimmed them back)

Popmmama, it does look like the khroniana right? But I think it's a thick leaf lacunosa)) I have a few of those and boy do I love this one. That is why I started three plants out of one. They flower at such a young and small age too, and very fragrant.

I just bough a highly priced 'hoya sunrise', that one should be fun to grow. I will be making more plants out of that too once it gets big enough. Have you seen the price people are fetching for this one? It's crazy

Yes, I'm sure the plant is lacunosa and not khroniana. But the leaf size/shape mixture is odd right? On the same plant, it acts so differently. I have three lacunosas. But they are all very small so I have no idea what the blooms look like on two of them. I do have a picture of the bloom from the cutting one. I'll post a picture of all three of mine tomorrow or something.

Yes, I've had sunrise on my watch list for a while. I bought one last year for about $35 (which now you can't even admire one for that price!). I ended up giving it to a friend because she really wanted one and she has been very good to me as far as plants are concerned. I just put another one on ebay on my watch list.

Popmama, mines is doing the same darn thing. I will take a pic for you. I know what you mean. Two different leaves coming off the same plant which I think is pretty strange. I can understand if it were grafted, but not a cutting. Beautiful just the same, right? I have a snow capped one. That is a beauty to behold, I will post that too.

You know what drives me crazy? When you see a plant or even just a cutting for let's say 50 dollars, but the shipping is 65 dollars. Good one right, lol?

I saw a sunrise on the net for 75 dollars and 75 to ship it. Crazy!! I would of bought it if the shipping was reasonable. I will grow mine out and hood a few up) I will say, the 'sunrise' is one of the prettiest I have seen for sure. That was so nice of you )

The prices of Hoyas on Ebay in general have been really nuts lately. I really really want a bella Luis Bois. I bought a small well rooted cutting from a local greenhouse about 7 - 10 years ago and paid about $10 for it. It turned out to have spider mites, and I decided it wasn't worth the battle so I chucked it. I remember back in the '80's or so, it was really easy to find them. It kills me to see the prices now.

Wendy, let's go 50/50! You take delivery and once it gets big enough to cut, you can root me a cutting..:Let me know since you and I go way back and I have trust for you) The prices are bonkers alone!!! You have my e-mail and address))) Anything you really want I'd go 50/50. Either one of us can share cuttings you know. Seems that is the only way to acquire these plants unless we wait for a few more years and who knows if we will be around then(

I love how they put the description " rare and unusual" to justify being ripped off. lol

That sounds like a great idea, if I see one that isn't priced over the moon. There's one (a small rooted cutting) that I've been following on Ebay right now... the bidding is at $238.50 with 6 hours left to go. Crazy. Been kicking myself big time... I could have gotten rid of those spider mites.

Really ? Don’t you hate that? I can’t believe it’s that high ! Where is it. I was looking and don’t see it Wendy ()

Found it. My god. 66 bids. Everyone wants it Wendy. Beautiful and that seller is luck to be able to make that money on a cutting like that. We are in the wrong business Wendy.

I feel this same pain with sarawak. The bidding is at over $200 right now for a 3-leaf cutting no roots. I do know this seller and she has a very good reputation. But still! This is not happening for me. So I will just have to try to be patient. I was unable to acquire sarawak from the Thailand vendor. I just keep looking!

Yeah, the seller of the little bella Luis Bois is actually the same one that I bought my imbricata and serpens cuttings from (along with heuschkeliana variegata, Rebecca, and mathilde cuttings). I've been really happy with what I've bought from her (they were all buy it now listings). I have no quarrel with the sellers. I see no reason why shouldn't they sell to the highest bidder. At the same time, it's terribly frustrating.

Wendy keep your eyes pealed for the next unusual one that is worth growing. Don’t forget. We can attain one here and there that we can’t afford alone but worth every cent. If you have PayPal I can always deposit my share or find another way.
    That was a beauty.
Have you ever heard of E-snipe ? That’s how I’ve won almost anything I really want. Let me know.
Who knows, something will come up. I don’t think for one moment these sellers only have one cutting to sell. More in the waiting. That’s how some make a living. Good morning by the way. Finally spring weather this weekend.
This would be a good weekend for anyone to take their Hoya outside and wash them off. Maybe even spray for insects if anyone is having an issue.

I know it's not the same, but a local greenhouse (they ship) has started selling Hoya bella variegata which I know some on this forum have looked for in the past: https://pottedelephant.com/products/hoya-bella-variegata-albo-marginata

I've bought items from their greenhouse before and have been happy with the quality, though I've never bought a Hoya from them. They recently started selling other Hoyas too, they're small but the prices are not insane. They also sell on Etsy.

I bought one thanks to you..lol

What is the name of their greenhouse?

Thanks for the link, sd. I see they're out of stock now. Mike, I think you cleared them out, lol :-)

I do have bella albo-marginata. It's been growing well and I took a cutting to root recently.

They're just called The Potted Elephant- they operate as a greenhouse and I think they used to supply local businesses with occasional open greenhouse days and Etsy sales. And now they have their own website.

Mike - it warms my heart to hear someone say "and I have trust for you" as you said to Wendy above. There needs to be more of this in our world.

A tale of three lacunosas. The one on the left I received as a cutting from a friend. She said that the plant was brought to the nursery in bad shape as a rescue. She wasn't sure that it was lacunosa or krohniana. But based on leaf shape, I think it's lacunosa of some sort. The one in the center is the one I posted above just pictured here for comparison. The one on the right I purchased from a small boutique plant shop in Denver and it was labeled lacunosa.

The one on the right is actually growing well. I'm pretty surprised.

Popmama, my lacanosa looks like yours in the center and in your earlier picture. I bought a cutting last summer and the buyer said it was a lacanosa. No other info. I guess there are a few types which have larger leaves, as yours on the right shows. Are they all fragrant for you (if they've bloomed). For such a little guy, with only two peduncles open, mine is very fragrant. I can't imagine what a huge plant full of blooms must be like. Pure heaven.

    Am I right Mike? Brad?

No blooms on these. The parent plant of the one in the center did have a couple of blooms on it at my friend's nursery. But it didn't really have a scent.

I also had two of the Costa Farms lacunosas: Ruby Sue and Snow Caps. Both bit the dust despite my valiant efforts to save them.

Love your pics Bill and Popmama of your lacunosa. I received mine today. Here is a pic and the description. I love the little 🍃 leaves .
