I'm sure it could work, Ann. Feed and water well. The roses would probably prefer to be an only rose in that area. My Florentina is very vigorous. I don't have Eden or PIP Eden.

At Rose Barni, they have a long pergola,with a climber growing up each side of each column,only about 1 foot apart. There's a lot of distance between each column, however. So, I agree, it's quite do-able.

It should be beautiful!

I have done this in several areas.

Mostly with the intent to wrap them around tree trunks. Last one is just a heap on and around my brick mailbox.

All are too small to cause problems yet.

Thanks everyone for your insight. This gives me courage. Question: Do you think I need to offset them?... or can I place them right across from each other?... like a back to back position, (if I rose had a back side). I feel like it would look more symmetrical if it they were planted back to back. Only worried I might run into issues I haven’t considered. Impart me with your rose growing wisdom.

How about the idea of running a large arch the length of the cement planter? Then place one type of climbing rose at each of the bases and have them start to climb that arch towards each other. When they get to the top they wind together as much as your trimming will allow them to.

I had a climbing rose application I put up here that was for a narrower area, and many people warned me that climbing roses will really bush out and the thorns will take no prisoners to anyone casually walking by the path. So you might want to think about plants with benign thorns and be prepared for the burden of heavy maintenance.
