Bay window seating

We are hoping to have a cozy bay window seating custom made by the builder. They proposed the one in the picture but we feel it's not going to be comfortable enough, lacking the back rest. For the room this size and the bay this wide, I think if we cover the entire bay area as window seating, it will be overwhelmingly huge. Other option that comes to mind is the seating that follows the bay but that is also going to look huge and will most likely cost us a lot too! Any other ideas?

What's the purpose of this cozy bay window seating?

I would think to be cozy, the bay should be much smaller.

A bay like that is somewhat unusual. Is it on the front or back of the house?

Are you already building or still planning?

As a cozy reading area. This room is in front of the house and the house is already being built. We still have a few weeks before they start working on custom woodworking.

I have, and had, window seats, but I’m most comfortable reading in a chair. In our current house, I took the cushion off the window seat, and now it is a home for plants and cats. How do YOU like to read?

That bay window is better suited to 2 wing chairs with ottomans. A window seat is (generally speaking) not comfortable seating unless it is a rectangular bay which allows users to rest their backs on the side wall. And even then, the lack of incline is a bit uncomfortable after a while.

Here's what we did in our bay window seating area.

You want to be able to look out the window, not have your back against it.

A bay window projects from the building face and doesn't go to the floor. This is a 3 sided building bay with 3 windows.

The seat in the drawing would be better if it were straight instead of 3 sided.

A box bay (rectangular) would be better for sitting and reading.

What is the height of the window stool above the floor? If you want to read you will need space for back cushions.

Looks like a pretty spot. I’d get a nice small table + lamp to set in the middle and then two comfy chairs, angled with one on each side. A comfortable reading position plus if you turn your head slightly you can see out the windows at your beautiful view.

I am obsessive reader. I have a bay window with a cushioned seat in it. I NEVER sit there to read. There is no back against which to lean. The cushion, by its nature, is thinner than a seat cushion. It is NOT comfortable at all. Instead, get two quality chairs, a table, a reading lamp, and place them there. OR... if you still like the look of a window seat, build one with cabinets beneath it to store things in. Place cushions and throw pillows upon it. If you have a dog or cat, place a blanket on the seat...and give the space over to them! (Trust me, they will claim it, especially if the sun shines there!).
