Discolored tile over gas fireplace

Just installed a floor to ceiling concrete Moroccan black and white tile on a ventless gas fireplace wall. After running the fireplace quite a bit in February, we’ve noticed a yellow discoloration that extends from the fireplace on up the wall. We’ve contacted the manufacturer but they’re only suggesting various ways to clean, one even going as far as sanding down the sealer and surface, then resealing! But we want to be able to use our fireplace again even if we clean it, but don’t want this to keep happening. We are so distraught, this wasn’t inexpensive, it was time consuming to install, and we have no idea what to do! Rip it all out and put up a different tile?? A last expensive, messy resort. We’ve only had this tile up about a month and a half!

I'd go back to the place where they were bought for advice. You might want to go to Bob Vila's site and read this article.

It's either the heat of the fireplace or the combustion products from the fireplace affecting the tile. Got a spare tile? Put it in the oven and age it at an elevated temperature. If it discolors, you know its the tile. If it doesn't, it's the combustion products.

A ventless gas fireplace is a very bad idea! Besides the carbon monoxide risk, putting all the CO2 and water vapor from combustion into your home is not a smart thing to do. Definitely go with a direct vent unit.

Thank you, but already built house w ventless fireplace per builder, as nowhere to put a chimney, so we’re stuck with it

It’s a Monessen 60” ventless gas fireplace. The tile is from Riad Tile, it’s Havana Black.

We contacted Riad tile who sent some helpful cleaning advice Which we’re going to try. But then what? After arduous cleaning or sanding and resealing, does it happen again? That’s my fear. but maybe we need to seal it more? Not sure.
