Help with Finishing Exterior Wood

I bought my home in October of last year and there are some improvements on the property that feature unfinished wood. These include wooden railings, support beams for a patio roof, the underside of a patio roof and the facia of a shed. These have varying levels of deterioration as shown in the photos, below.

Can someone provide some advice on how to finish these items? I'd like to be able to get these to last as long as possible and still look nice.

What kind of finish/paint do you recommend to get these things to last? How much sanding should be done, if any? As shown, some cracks have developed. Should the cracks be filled in with something?

According to the County, these improvements were made in 2008.

I would finish with a quality solid color stain like below. A pressure washer should be used to clean the wood and give some "tooth" to the surface.

Don't bother filling the cracks as the filler may come loose over time, and it will look worse than if you did nothing. The major problem I see is that it looks from the staining around the nail heads that interior (non-galvanized/non-stainless steel) nails were used at least in places and these will continue to bleed and will show thorough stain or paint over time. Finally, that yellow, unprotected cable shown coming out of the box in the first photo is not to code.

Thanks for the help with this.

Does anyone have experience with the Behr Waterproofing Stain and Sealer? Would a second or third coat be advised, or would that be too thick?
