Shopping for shrubs online

Does anyone Have a suggestion for where to buy shrubs online? The viburnum I want isn’t sold locally (Omaha, NE) .

Actually - except for growers who sell their own production directly to the public - most material presented to retail markets is obtained through the shopping as it were of wholesale suppliers in what is a not terribly different version of the public shopping the retail stores. With what is purchased and presented to end consumers being locally suitable depending entirely on who is doing the buying for any given retailer, what they know about the subject and what they think is necessary or desirable.

Also there is a constant interest in novelty that means regionally untested variations are likely to be presented on a routine basis.

If you mail order a plant, you can't really know how it will do in your climate

This depends entirely on what that plant is. In addition the genetics of a plant determines where it will grow. So that where it was produced for sale has no bearing on where else it can perform successfully. With the only problem with stock produced in the south having been shipped north being that the growing season may be farther behind in the north at the time of shipping. Resulting in cold damage to newly arrived southern grown plants in a seasonal state of growth that is too far advanced for the north at that time.

Forestfarm (OR) carries an extensive list of shrubs. And just typing in the plant name in Google or other search engine should turn up various suppliers as well.

For viburnums specifically, check out Classic Viburnums. And they're located in NE btw.

Thanks, Arbordave. I was very glad to find out about the Classic Viburnums website. Had not heard about them before. Last year I ordered several viburnums from Nature Hills Nursery online, and they arrived in excellent condition and very well packed. Of course you will pay a premium to get them that way. One thing I would suggest is, before ordering online, check if your local nurseries will special order things for you. In the past, I sometimes assumed that something was unavailable because I didn't see it in the nursery, but found out years later that I could have had it if I had requested the nursery to order it for me from their supplier.

its usually more productive that you do the research.. and find a name.. and then ask about the name.. rather than hope we can just provide a list ..

you got lucky this time ..

otherwise.. i had about 1600 hosta.. of which about 3/4 came mail order ..

650 conifers.. of which about 400 came mail order..

mail order is the way to go.. to fill your hearts desires in the garden ...

one trick .... the better sources use the latin names .. so find that first.. and then add the word price after it... and you will find sources that sell it ... ill do it for you this time .... well i was going to.. but you didnt tell us the one you want.. is it a secret??? .... lol

Local nurseries tend to carry plants that do well in the area. If you mail order a plant, you can't really know how it will do in your climate.

I have in the past purchased many perenial flowers online but never shrubs. Some I see online are very very small and I’d like something that is at least a gallon. I appreciate knowing about the viburnum website! Thanks!
