How much difference? Nine vs ten is not the indicator of an open feel. There are far too many other factors. If you are unhappy in nine? It could be any of a million factors: Walls windows, light , siting, direction of light/exposure..and on and on. If you don't LOVE it ,don't BUY it.

Know that a fourteen or twenty foot ceiling can feel very closed in - when there is not enough width and length to a space to support that elevation. ................

Point is, it's more than height, that makes home feel like HOME. Only you can answer.

We lived in a house with 9’ ceilings and then we built our custom home that has 10’ ceilings. True, it’s only one foot...but the real difference IMO comes from the increases in door and window sizes and casings and moldings. Everything is bigger, there is more light coming through the larger windows and doorways...you basically get an airier, grander feeling.

If you were moving to a house with 8 foot ceilings, it might be a concern. But going from 10 feet to 9 doesn't strike me as a big enough difference to abandon a floorplan you love.

I think this is one of those things only you can answer, because how each of us perceives this is going to be different.

For me, I feel a large difference between 8 feet to 9 feet. However I don't feel as much of a bump up from 9 to 10 - except for in smaller rooms where I actually don't like 10 foot ceilings. A hall bathroom with a 10 foot ceiling but a relatively tiny foot print feels like an elevator shaft to me and I don't like the feeling at all.

But that's me. Someone else may not even notice, or may prefer using the facilities waiting for an elevator to drop out of the sky on them. :) Different strokes and all that.

For me, I would not give up a house that I liked because it "only" had 9 foot ceilings. YMMV.

Are you very tall? I only ask because a friend of ours has a son who is 6"8". He felt very closed in in their old house. Not sure how high the ceilings were. When they moved to a house with much higher ceilings he was much happier. If you don't feel closed in with the 9 foot ceilings I think it's fine,

Thanks everyone for the great inputs. Our family is not very tall so I don’t anticipate us feeling terrible in that perspective. I was more worried that the house does not have the grandeur feeling due to 9ft ceiling. For the width, the great room is 17x18 ..

Personally, I would take the 9 ft ceilings over 10 ft. It is better for heating and ac However, everyone is different, so only you can answer that question for you and your family.

"Grand" and an extra foot isn't worth much when you are sucking a thumb or have flu and are curled up on the couch., kleenex and "bankie" at hand.

A ten foot ceiling needs 8' doors, needs appropriate headers, windows, base skirting. Go back to the nine, and take photos. Go home. stare at them.

PS........ 17 x 18 doesn't NEED a ten foot elevation. Nine is perfectly fine. Decorate "VERTICALLY" as opposed to mid cen horizontal : ) lines

My living room is fine at eight feet on 15 x 21. Would another foot be better? Maybe......but flopped on my sofa? I don't really care.

Thanks everyone for the inputs! I went and looked at the home again and since it’s a two story home I dint think the ceiling height felt like a deal breaker, specially with how much we love the floor plan
