Since you included the Wisconsin Forum I assume you’re in the state. Which zone are you in and what is the soil like down there?

tj

Yes we are in Wisconsin, zone is 5a I believe. I’m not sure of soil type.

Wildflowers would be tough to establish and maintain. You’d need to remove the grass to get them started and weeding is inevitable. I imagine to preserve the view you don’t want things taller than that shrub on the other side of the road? If so, hydrangeas and lilacs come to mind. Salt spray from the road could also be a factor. Can you get water to the plants to get them established for a year or two?

tj

The low growing and groundcover Cotoneaster would be worth looking into as an option.

TJ, Yes we can get water down there while being established. I do think anything we do will require us to remove the grass/weeds along the edge won’t it?

I like hydrangea and lilacs. I don’t think a hedge would work because of the slope across the yard but could certainly incorporate them into a grouping.

True I don’t want anything to large to impact the view... but we are on a ledge and the “shrub” on the other side is actually a tree. I’m sorry Pictures aren’t giving the best perspective here.

Christopher, I can look into that for close along to the road. Im mostly interested though in what to have to give some visual interest from the house. I suppose we could leave natural along the road if we have something to define the edge from the yard.

So this is more about screening the road than getting rid of a hard to mow section of grass on a slope. If that is the case, the red and yellow twig dogwoods could be nice and awesome in the winter. Not sure, but aren't there some shrub size willows?

Mostly very tall grass a tree and yes maybe some shrubs.

Yes, I wasn’t very clear initially what we want most is to give some edge/separation and improve the view.

Check out Prairie Nursery for native prairie plants. They do have various package plans for wide swaths.

Thank you TJ for that link.

I'd put in a shrubbery. If the lower areas tend to be damp, go with that. There are a ton of native shrubs to choose from Beauty bush, nine bark, viburnums, I'd put in a tree or two. Maybe a redbud or amelanchier.

Be sure when planting to have a good setback from the road to avoid salt and snow kicked up by the plow.
