Tinkering With Easter Table Ideas

last modified: 5 years ago

My mom and I are putting together plans for our big midday meal on Easter Sunday. We will have 11 people for the weekend, and decided on a fairly traditional menu of ham, potato salad, carrot soufflé and a lemony wild rice and arugula dish. I’m making a clementine cake topped with chocolate ganache for dessert, served with a scoop of creamsicle ice cream (vanilla and orange sherbet).

My mom collects rabbit figures (well, somebody gave her one and she liked it and before you knew it she had a collection, isn’t that how those things start?) and I borrowed a few for the table to augment my own Easter decorations. I have more eggs to hang from the chandelier, and jelly beans to scatter on the table, and individual bags to go at everyone’s place, but this is the general idea. It’s an in-your-face pastel explosion and definitely geared towards a “baby’s first Easter” sort of look— def not everyone’s cup of tea. 🙄.

I had pictures posted but when I tried to edit a misspelling they all disappeared! Trying again...

The big planter in the middle will be filled with champagne bottles on ice. I will put flowering azaleas in pink pots on either side of the large rabbits (my mom’s). One of the pots is on the table now with a shamrock plant from St. Pat’s.

The dinner plates are a Limoges pattern and the smaller plates are Vietri. Since we’ve decided not to have a first course those plates will be stacked on the sideboard with the cake on a (what else) bunny toile stand.

These muslin bunny bags will be at each place with candy treats, a small gift and a few lottery tickets for the “kids”.

I’m using this embroidered Easter cloth of my mother’s on the sideboard; it’s a better backdrop for pastel than mahogany. This area needs tweaking; I may remove the lamps and use tall vases of white hydrangeas instead . The little Peter Rabbits pushing egg carts may have to go somewhere else.

The cloth needs a good ironing!

It is all lovely. I have a collection of vintage holiday postcards, although I don't write on mine (most have been used/mailed), but I like that idea! We will miss (another *SIGH*) family dinner for Easter this year, but I will do something special for the Mr. and myself. We won't have our second vaccine dose by then, neither will my BIL. I will sure miss attending the Easter service at our church too. BUT, BY GOLLY, hopefully this is the last holiday get-together for forego because of Covid! We'll be fully vaccinated early May.

The soufflé is savory, not dessert-y at all. I’ll get the recipe from my SIL if you’re interested. And yes, that’s the recipe from Cookie and Kate! It’s delicious and can be served room temp or cold. It’s a good acidic counterpoint to the dill potato salad and stuffed eggs.

Moss is definitely on the menu, daisy! I am going to mound it on the cocktail table in the sitting room just across from the dining room and put the bottlebrush chicks on it, along with the eggs on candles.

I took the Peter rabbits pushing carts off the sideboard and put them on the great room mantle. In the picture everything looks very small, but IRL the sizes are okay— everything just has to sit under the level of the tv screen—which we have used only during the election season and never before or after. I see a Samsung frame tv in my future.

    Memorabilia from the kids’ childhoods

Blue and white gingham check carrot banner, could not resist this as I have two chairs upholstered in this and two slipper chairs with hems banded in the same fabric. I’m going all in matchy!

Beautiful table setting. Envy you the ability to have 11 at your table. We have guidelines to have only a 10 person bubble (so that means my husband, myself, 2 daughters and their boyfriends + 4 other people) for the forseeable future, and only outside. We are thinking long and hard about which additional people to add to our group!

All the people aged 50 and older will be fully vaccinated, and all the others will have had their first shot. All the “kids” who weren’t eligible to get a vaccine before have gone to or have appointments at mass vaccination events in Ga and NC. So it’s a happy situation that we can do this. Otherwise we would have the 20-40 group test several days before the gathering and quarantine until they got here by car. But in our state 11 ppl are still ok regardless, as long as people in high risk categories are fully vaccinated and out of the waiting period. It’s a happy set of circumstances!

I'm so excited for you, KSWL, how wonderful to have baby's first Easter. Thx again for the great salad idea! I will ask the family how a carrot souffle might strike them before I trouble you for the recipe, thx

@User I would like to see the carrot souffle recipe, if it's not too much trouble. We like carrots, but I don't fix them alot of different ways. Thank you!

Tina I will get the recipe from my SIL, they are staying in our rental house and she will make it there. I was going to make a carrot soup with a dollop of creme fraiche but she volunteered the soufflé and she’s a great cook, so that also eliminated the need for a bowl at the place setting.

What a fun table setting! Don’t forget to put in a couple bunnies in your powder room too. Our Easter will be just the four of us again this year. We aren’t eligible for vaccines until later in April and our families are all a days drive or more away. Miss our families tremendously as it’s been over a year.

Sarah, I know! It’s been very hard on us all. We have spent a lot of time and $$ getting tests when we weren’t exposed (or thought we weren’t) so some of us could gather at Christmas, for my birthday last August, etc. When our first grandchild was born in November we went into ninja quarantine mode and kept a tight circle of me, DH, DS2 and my mother, still testing before each time we went up to see him. When they finally came down for a week we quarantined in our house for two weeks beforehand then tested. We also had DS’s GF tested even though he hadn’t seen her in 10 days. None of us got it but I know other people who were very careful and still contracted Covid. We were uber careful from the start because of my mother and DH’s and my medical history. Truly, I feel we have been let out of jail!

Asp my dining room is still my husband’s office so will have to wait for Easter weekend to set the table. I only have 1 bunny ornament and will set it on the mantle with some flowers. Our table will be set with an embroidered tablecloth my grandmother made me, our China, silver and crystal. I’m having an arrangement made for our table by a friend that’s a floral designer. She made our thanksgiving arrangement and it was lovely.

Happy Easter to all! So glad many of you are able to gather with family. We will be able to see our families this summer! Living 10-20 hours drive away from family has been tough especially this year. We see the light at the end of this long dark tunnel!

While I was out today returning ONE set of my mother’s pajamas to Marshalls I saw a set of 8 PINK hobnail pressed glass goblets with rabbits on them. Quicker than you can say jack rabbit I was carrying them to the checkout line. They were $3.99 each! Of course I needed 12, and of course I went looking for four more online and ended up paying about $60 for four more on Poshmark— still dirt cheap for glassware.

They look just right with my pastel explosion of a color scheme. I was also inspired to hang almost all of the tissue paper covered eggs from the chandelier copying a tablescape in my idea file.

They look lovely with the china pattern

I haven’t hung all the eggs yet but this gives a good idea of the look. The smaller eggs are covered in patterned tissue paper. The larger white one is paper mache and the larger green one with the rabbit is decoupage. The last six eggs to hang are similar, smaller decoupage ones.

(BTW, over in the corner is my new silver chest. It finally arrived while I was looking for something else and I’m very happy with it. The portrait above it is one of DH’s forebears, a general in the War of 1812. He has a bit of an unpleasant glare but, thankfully, is a temporary resident on our wall. DS1 is supposed to collect him at Easter. )

Adorable, martinca! I also miss Pier one, especially for their napkins and napkins rings. They had so much merchandise unique to their store, I was surprised when they went under.

Tina, aqua glasses also sound springy and summery! I guess there is something about Easter after a long winter that makes us long for pretty and light colors.

He is four months old now, I can’t believe how much he has grown!

Zalco I do have bunny toils plates but only six, so I’m mot using them this year for our group that will vary from 11 to 12, depending on when DS2”s GF will join us for meals. I have set up a project board for chores, shopping, and items that can be precooked. My mother thinks it is over the top but I want the rest of them to see what still needs doing. The list won’t get done if it’s just on my workflowy app. I can take the post it notes off to hand to someone going to the store.

We redid the sideboard / dessert buffet and with the addition of flowers I think it will do:

This is a low, lacy etched vintage cake platter and the other is Jay Wilfred bunny toile. Easter desserts will be a gluten free chocolate cake and a (purchased) lemon pomodoro, sliced into layers that I will frost with a marscapone, whipped cream, limoncello, lemon and crystallized ginger cream.

I also swapped out the jelly beans scattered on the table with Jordan almonds which look like little eggs. I found two four inch azaleas that aren’t in full bloom but an still looking as they aren't the exact color I wanted. The green goblets were replaced by smaller green wine glasses now that we have pink goblets for water or tea.

It looks much less crowded without the large bunnies moved to the buffet. If the azaleas bloom out in a pretty mound they will stay: otherwise ill use cut flowers.

Finally, a closeup of the eggs hanging from the chandelier. The two larger ones are suspended by a pink gingham ribbon. my mother likes it but I‘m itching to change the ribbon to clear fishing line. What say you, GW? 🐰

As to the gingham ribbons. I don’t think they are bad. I understand they are inconsistent with the other things, but if it makes your mother happy, let her have it.

It all looks great! I think we have a common love for pretty glassware. I have a little collection of pink depression glass and have a cake plate very similar to yours - but in pink. I love the pink glasses - and it makes me remember my grandmother's dining room table set for a family meal, she had some favorite pink glasses she often used. :) The azaleas are perfect!

Just perfect KSWL. I love everything. Do you have a place at table for the little one or will he not be sitting yet. As a grandmother I had a high chair at my house permanently. I have the sweeden stokke Tripp trapp chair that she used from 6 months and is still using it today at 9 years . for me it is the best piece of baby gear that I have ever bought.

Thank you ladies for the list love! Around here there are a lot of eye rolls but they are used to my projects.

Tina I am definitely looking for that vintage “feel” with the plates, glassware and my MIL’s silver.

Andrew is not sitting up yet but I actually plan to get that exact high chair for him Lyban, as all the young moms say it is the easiest to operate one handed and to clean.

I’ve ordered 100 insulated paper cups for the weekend that we will use for both hot and cold beverages except at dinners....still trying to think of ways to make things run smoothly. This will be our first house party with everybody. SIL and her husband will be staying at our rental house about a quarter of a mile away and I need to stock the fridge with a few staples for them.

Oh this is all so nice! I agree the Jordan almonds are sooo pretty; too bad none of us here like them. I love the bunny cookie jars on the buffet.

As for whiteboards, I am a whiteboard nut! I have 3. One of mine is double-sided, and the reverse is four quadrant graph paper. Very handy when I was helping my kids with geometry, algebra, and (even today!) statistics. I also use them for to-do lists. I must pass along a favorite source for dry erase markers. Really good quality and i love the colors, too!

I also am a Workflowy devotee, thanks to you. Were you impacted by their security kerfuffle the other day? I nearly needed a defibrillator. My *life* is on there; I think my to do list is 18 pages long.

Andrew is gorgeous, as is your DD. He also has a very self-possessed expression. I know that sounds crazy, but I recall thinking the same thing about my BFF's newborn 20+ years ago. Her daughter, almost from the beginning, had a certain demeanor. Kind of a regal bearing. And still does. FWIW. I expect big things from grandbaby KSWL!

log into my WF account I thought we would have to cancel Easter! That is at least partly why I did the project board, just in case the site was closed again as well as underscore to the others the sheer amount of chores that need doing. They are appropriately cowed at this point, I think. This am my mother asked hesitantly.....is there anything on the list for me today?

I am a proud, head over heels in love grannie but I do think Andrew is objectively cute—-as if that’s a thing, knowing all such observations are inherently subjective. 🙄. Our DD just got an offer from a research institute to work on a DOD contract writing algorithms for nanotechnology systems. We are very proud of her accomplishments of course but I now look at her in wonder for having produced the perfect human!

Really cute. Maybe consider adding a burlap ribbon or table runner down the middle of the table and some easter grass or moss.

use glasses or candle holders to create levels. your potted flowers on large candlesticks would be cute with a ribbon tied on the bottom of the flower pots.

How I remember that pandemic Easter! We had 13 people and the coordination of vaccinations, quarantining and travel from three states took a few months to plan. I had missed our extended family gatherings so much during that time, now thinking about it I feel so lucky that we all got through that time in good health — although it was the year DH was diagnosed with cancer.

Lest anyone think that the danger of that time is a distant memory, today is the funeral of my dear friend’s husband who died earlier this week of complications from Covid. He had been a long time smoker, although not since he was dx with COPD a few years back, and he lost his battle wirh the infection plus pneumonia after weeks in the ICU on a ventilator. So many lost, it is still heartbreaking and unthinkable— one and a quarter million Americans dead.
