Is pool width too narrow

We are in the planning phases and would love some advice. We are looking at putting in a pool that is 12'x30'. Due to our lot size, steep grade, and building regs we cannot go any wider than 12 ft. We could potentially increase the length to 36'. We are not lap swimmers and have 3 elementary-school aged children. We are concerned that it will just feel too narrow when you are in it, or visually look too small or out of proportion. We are leaning against a built-in spa as the pool is already pretty small. This is a big project, the retaining walls, landscaping, etc. will be the bulk of the cost and we are trying to figure out if it is worthwhile. Then again, no child ever said that a pool is too small to have fun in. Any feedback and/or photos from owners of similarly sized pools? thanks
