Wait and see. Maybe the soil settled. If the plant is gone, it is already long gone. If it is alive (likely), then it will probably be much smaller and less mature. Good luck and consider posting an update in 1 month when the pips unfurl. :)

I agree with utog, Your hole was probably too deep. If you planted it 4” down, right after the digging then the soil settled. The roots and or the crown may have been exposed. However, I am in zone 5b as well and I am not seeing pips yet, except on my Liberty which I only found by digging around a bit. I covered it back up with the leaf matter. So it may be to soon to see pips. Wait and see.

djacobz, I don't see pips on any of mine yet. So I wasn't expecting pips: just surprised to see this hole. I don't normally see holes where hostas were.

But since I was not the one who replanted it (I asked my husband to dig it up because I thought it might be tough to get it out in a tight spot, but I was planning to replant it myself), it wouldn't surprise me if it had been planted too deep. With it having been fully leafed out, I must not have noticed.

I'll wait for it to come up, then replant. Thanks!
