Over-range Microwave against wall

Hey all,

Design issue here. I want to install a microwave and replace the kitchen cabinets to the left of the kitchen window when we move into our new home...After doing some research..it looks like I might encounter a problem with the microwave door not opening fully if the microwave is against the wall... Here's my idea:

  • Add .25 or .5" molding/filler to the left of the microwave so the door is able to open properly...
  • Add cabinets above the microwave to the ceiling removing that soffit space - remove the crown molding in the process and add to the top of the cabinets as a finishing element
  • Add spice cabinet - 9" or 12" wide next to range
  • Remove open corner cabinet next to the window and add a smaller 12"-18" wide cabinet
  • Finish

I want to keep the backsplash, which I know I'll need to remove some to fit the microwave over the range.

I'm not sure if the range up against the wall like that needs to have a stainless steel shield or if the backsplash will be ok...

I'm also not sure if it will look strange if the microwave is offset by .25 - .5" from the range below to allow the door to open fully...my guess is it should be ok since the backsplash already allows for the range to not be directly up against that wall.

We want to keep the colors the same so adding white cabinets and a white filler piece between the wall and microwave shouldn't look strange hopefully. Wondering what people think.

Thanks all!
