Chamblee's Visit

Some friends and I took a road trip to Tyler, Tx. Friday. The main stop was Chamblees Roses. Did we ever misbehave! We all had lost some roses to the deep freeze in February but that was just a thinly veiled flimsy excuse to buy more roses. I called the day before to make sure they would be open - left a message and Mark called me back. 3 greenhouses were full of gorgeous roses! And more 3 gallon potted ones were outside. It was rose buying heaven! I got 32 [5 3 gallons, the rest 1 gallons].....my friends got 10. We had previously made 3 roadside nursery stops so had a few plants already. Roses were stacked 3 deep in the truck bed - I have a cover so they were well protected.

The roses were just gorgeous! So healthy, green leaves, buds - I cannot imagine healthier roses! Mark and Gigi are worthy stewards of Mark Chamblee's rose business. I expected to see roses damaged by the -4 degree weather they endured, but these roses are covered in beautiful green foliage and will be blooming soon, some already were.

If anyone is near Tyler - hop in your car at the earliest opportunity and go visit! You will thank yourself! Go spend that stimulus check! Also......if, like our group, all that rose shopping frenzy left you hungry, we stumbled upon a wonderful restaurant. Down I-20 at Lindale [turn right, it is a couple of miles down on the left] is the Italian Garden restaurant. It sits off the road - there is a sign. It is owned by native Italians, I think, judging from their accent. A lovely restaurant - overlooking a field with cattle, great service and the food is just wonderful! I mean - really, really good! We took home dessert, cannoli. Absolute heaven! Wish I had bought a dozen! We had a perfect day!

Whether you order from Chamblees or go visit........it is a worthwhile experience. Did I spend too much? Yes. Do I care? No! These plants are so healthy, will grow to be beautiful plants and give so much pleasure. Oh, and they have beautiful rose trees too! Hope you all who live close can make the trip!

Wow, sounds like a shopping dream come true, "I'll take one of each!!!"
    but
Good lord! You have 32 roses to plant??

Well.........actually no. I have more than that. Some bare roots that just came in, some 4" pots from High Country and Northland.......The 1 gallon Chamblees are super easy to plant.........Time is my problem, trying to finish getting my mom's house ready for an estate sale - 1-2 more days should finish my part - then I can play in the yard full time! I wanted to replace some of the ones I lost in the freeze, then got extras of roses I really love like South Africa, Easy Does It, Koko Loco. Needed 4 Lady Banksia - the freeze just ruined them. And my birthday is this month, then Mother's Day and I am sure there is a Grandmother's Day sometime so an excuse for rose treats..........dont need any more clothes, vehicles, household decor or horses.......roses/plants are my one indulgence. Rather be planting and caring for roses than going to a gym!

I'd like to go there one day. I finally made to Antique Rose Emporium and that was incredible. Ah, I miss travelling..............

Thanks for the update Judith, I’m glad Chamblees is still well stocked and didn’t suffer from the freeze. I remember an earlier thread that Chamblees had some restrictions on selling some Austins. Do you know if they had them locally?

    Flagstaff Arizona. Don’t forget Winona.

is this a discussion from the Wayback Machine? Was the property sans roses not up for sale well over a year ago? And who is this Mark? Talk to me. So I can see. What’s going on?

I didnt see any Austins in the greenhouses or outside and frankly.......in the euphoria of gathering up roses, forgot to ask. I know they were more expensive last time I went than ordering from David Austin in Tyler, [as are most places that sell the DA roses]; guess that is why I wasnt interested. Mark Chamblee told me when he stopped carrying them that DA had gotten so cost prohibitive for anyone selling his roses that it wasnt worth it for him to carry them anymore.

The original Chamblees sold a couple of years ago. Sadly, the property is now the home of acres of RVs for sale. The original office is still there. Mark and Gigi, who bought the name and the roses, are super nice people who work hard to maintain and preserve Chamblees. I had known for some years that Mark Chamblee was ready to retire - he is a great guy with so much rose knowledge. It is a huge amount of work to be in the nursery business - Mark and Gigi are enthusiastic and I sure hope they sell alot of roses and make a success of this. I got off without my receipt but think if you go to the nursery, it is cheaper than the mail order prices. I am quite sure I made their day! They will have more but I got their last 3 Pink Don Juans. I had one and it froze. Had not found any nursery selling 1 gallon Lady Banksias but Chamblees does. They also have hibiscus, crepe myrtles and other plants. If anyone plans to go........I would think sooner than later would be smart. I was able to replace all but a few of the roses I had that died, and got others I had been wanting. Selection was excellent. These roses are so healthy - green shiny leaves, buds forming - first class.

Winona is an interesting very small town - 3 churches, 4 liquor stores! And once you get off I-20, the short drive to Chamblees is simply gorgeous! So Ben, when are you leaving??!!

Thanks so much for the details, Judith. I did visit the new Chamblees in Winona last July, during Certified’s trailer sale. I agree, it‘s a pleasant drive, the roses are very well grown, and I met Gigi who was very nice. The other big bonus is that they grow and sell their own peaches which taste 1000x better than store bought. I remember she asked us how many we wanted, and we said ‘All of them!’

You went to Rose Heaven, came back and have no pictures to share?! That's just not right.

    I want pictures and names!

I am ashamed to admit that since I had to step up to the next Windows......I have not learned how to post photos. I am going to learn soon.......Meanwhile, here is the list of loot I got. Not the least bit ashamed about that!

    3 gallons:

    Ring of Fire

    Shirley's Bouquet

    Chicago Peace

    Moonlight in Paris

Rio Samba [early birthday gift from one of the friends who went]

    1 gallons:

    Easy Does It

    Cinco de Mayo

    Fire Opan Kolorscape

    Koko Loco

    St. Tropez

    Violet's Pride

    Sweet Jane

    Sunbeam Veranda

    Bliss Parfuma

    4 Lady Banksia

    3 Pink Don Juan

    Kiss Me Kate

    Good As Gold

    Beverly

    Liv Tyler

    Twilight Zone

    South Africa

    Carefree Beauty

    La Marne

    Mutablis

    Cheri Kolorscape

    Soul Sister

I had lost 8-9 of these; some I wanted another of and some, like Liv Tyler, Twilight Zone, Sweet Jane, I just wanted to try. I dont know when I will be going back, and there were several that were sold out last year when I went so figured I had better get them while they were available. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it! These are so healthy I cant wait to get them planted and watch them take off! I know I got too many but I have a place for them. Also figured that since my electric bill was huge after the snow/ice, my rose bill might as well be too!
