Dear friend, in order to have breba, There are few condition, 1). variety , Since nursery same tree full of breba, This variety has breba, 2), It must be keep at full sun area. 3). fertilizer, My trees was like your tree - few or nope breba, last summer/fall , I used miracle grow bloom booster fertilizer, this spring, All my potted fig trees/cherry trees are full of fruits. My friend has the same results as well.

2. you are not correct: my trees are in my dark basement and are loaded with brebas

I did not get one the past 2 seasons on my tree. It's also not put on much new growth, just a few inches each year.

I am currently removing 2 old shrubs that have been blocking the tree's light and robbing the soil of everything!

Hoping next year goes better.

Is it true Breba crops are only on the previous years growth?

if so, that may explain why mine did not fruit early in the season, there was hardly any new growth.

From what I remember and follow no tree should be fertilized if still dormant.

I fertilize when I see that buds are swelling.

A lot of fig tree's are rooted cuttings.

I ordered cuttings from ebay, each about 10" long, rooted them, eventually they will be a nice tree.

The ROOTED cuttings from the adult tree that is at least 10 feet high and that produces lots of figs in abundance. Last year I bought 3, 2 to 3 foot high plants that were loaded with fruit. Did not ripen in time for the cold to move in though.

They woke up and are only pushing leaves. I went back to see what the other mature rooted cuttings were doing for them from the same tree same lot. left overs of what I did not buy , and they ALL had figs coming on without leaves. not mine though. That is a huge confusing issue for me. What am I doing wrong?

MY three only leaves, and their 20 or so same plants I bought loaded with breba crop, all of them.

I have 2 figs right now . 1 in ground and 1 in container.

Neither have grown more than a few inches the past 2 years, so I figure that is why I didn't get a breba crop.

The shrubs I am removing have been shading my figs!

Did you ask where you bought them what my be wrong?

Ha. I tried but the owner wasn’t there. The worker said all they use is miracle grow. That I find hard to believe. Look at the whole lot from which I bought mine. Everyone busting out in Breba figs. Crazy

What temps was it kept over the winter? How cold does the porch get? Is it enclosed?

"Fig trees growing in cold climate don't reliably produce a breba crop due to main stems freezing when temperatures drop below 15°F. However container grown fig trees that were stored in a mild cold spot during the cold months will bear a breba and a main crop reliably."

maybe my problem is my tree's dont go dormant.

"In zone 10-11, unless the fig tree goes dormant, it will not make any brebas."

I am in zone 9b I think, and I don't think mine go dormant.

Jojo, thank!! Funny how trees in your area don't grow better than mine. There must be a cold place to put yours for a few weeks..lol Maybe a refrigerator? One big enough to keep it cold. how about a store near by with a huge walk in storage? They should rent space like that. Imagine the money one could make with cold storage? I wonder if anyone else grows figs where you live in ground or pots? Not enough people here to help or let us know I guess(

As for mine, I keep it dormant until the porch warms up. I am lucky. They porch gets cold enough to keep them asleep while my citrus just slow down but do really great. They flower like crazy and the bugs stay away! I even keep cold loving orchids out there that need that in order to flower. It never dips below 45 in there and never above 55 unless I heat it up. So perfect. Once the sun gets higher like this at a higher angle, with the trees bare it can get over 90 in there which by March it get pretty warm awaking them up and forcing all the citrus to bloom like mad. Here is a citrus photo full of blooms)) But still no Breba figs((

Ok. I'm stumped.. lol!! Sounds like your keeping yours at good temps.

Our winters are insane! We average 40 for lows... rarely does it drop below 36. But our highs can be 50-70 in the winter. It's a roller coaster!!

Maybe work would let me use the walk in cooler for the winter. LOL!!!!!

Maybe Al @tapla (mid-Michigan, USDA z5b-6a), could share some insight on this.
