Not unexpected that they would have come back the following year. However if the current shoots are not full sized they aren't likely to bloom this time.

and if he weedwhips them now.. ask him to be sober when he uses power tools.. lol ..

you need leaves.. to grow the roots.. to achieve sexual maturity ... which is when they flower ... so who knows how far behind they might be.. with lesser leaves for 2 years running ..

hope for the best .. dont be upset if they dont bloom.. but do the happy dance if they do ...

just wait and see .. and.. let us know ...

Well, actually, you’re right! The first time wasn’t a mistake, he didn’t want them there, but the next year was. He came and apologized and bought me new ones. It is kind of a struggle between us. I keep wanting to plant more and more and he wants me to take care of what I already have! So we compromise. I garden more and more and do take care of what I have and he agrees slowly to more flower beds. 😀

I am not really hoping for blooms but maybe just that they at least put out good foliage.

Well, my Raspberry Sundae peony that got chopped now has 6 buds, two of which are about to open, and my Duchess de Nemours has one bud still in the hard stage. I am astonished at the hardiness of these peonies! They both have great bushy foliage!
