Ok Birds, I'll bite. What is corn water and how do you apply it ?

CeresMer-- It has never been my experience that Ambridge gets large. I have grown it for many years and I have had more then one. None of them have ever been over 4 feet at most.

Kristine LeGault 8a pnw - Put 1 cup of Cracked Corn or Cornmeal (what I use because I have it) in 5 gallon bucket of water. Stir around every once in awhile for 1 hour. Strain through a fine sieve and use the water in a sprayer for bad infections or just pour around the base of the rose (no need to strain) for a very minor infection or for prevention. I pick off the offending leaves first.

The Corn Water is high in Potassium which (per StrawChicago) helps reduce the fungal diseases. May work on Blackspot and Powdery Mildew also, but I haven't tried it. I would try the Corn Water before any thing else. No guarantees, but it works for me!

CeresMer Zone 7a NJ - Even in Southern California it never got very big. Amazingly enough after probably 15 years it was only 3 feet maybe 3 1/2 at the most and only 2 feet or so wide. It was the rust that made me get rid of it.

Birds, thanks for the corn reminder. I believe Straw says it has a similar nutritional make up as manure since that's what cattle eat. Bonus: it doesn't smell. I did not know about corn water, though. I have used cracked corn around the base of roses as you would other amendments. The potassium also makes the canes stronger on roses that want to flop.

Ambridge Rose has stayed at about 3' for years for me, too. She comes back strong every year.

I might need to try the corn trick... my Olivia rose all have very thin canes.. is this cracked corn from feed store? and thanks for the info on ambridge rose! She is arriving soon, and will be going on front of the border!

For me, the Corn Water is for the fungal diseases. The Alfalfa Tea (fermented) has nitrogen, vitamins from the fermentation (a little bit smelly) and growth hormones from the alfalfa. Really boosts growth.

Never tried Banana Peel Tea! High in potassium from bananas? Would help with the fungal diseases then.

I do - 1 cup Humic Acid, 2 oz. Molasses, 2 oz. Apple Cider Vinegar, 2 oz. Liquid Kelp and 4 oz. Fish Emulsion in my 2 gallon watering can (fill the rest with water). Pour 1/4 of the can on each rose. I do about 1x/month or alternate months with Alfalfa Tea. This is the second year I've been using this (along with an organic rose fertilizer) and I have a lot of new roses this year and last, but I like mixing up stuff and it seems to be working. All the roses, even if they're very small, seem to be loving it.
