Oh no, its already strange to say, "I read on the laundry forum" to anyone. How about saying, "I was watching the Laundry Guy...".

Lol, I know. Watching it made me think of Mamapinky and all of her vast knowledge of cleaning and such. I enjoyed 2 episodes last night. My only complaint is that I wish he’d do a better job explaining the different types of products. Everything he has is in plain glass jars, like “Soap Flakes”. I know what that means because of this forum, but It could be made clearer.

When our son went to college, he was appalled that some of the kids in his freshman dorm did not know how to do their own laundry, so I can see where young people might need this.

Cavimum, I was one of those young people ;0) My mother - bless her heart - was not particularly good at laundry and wasn't really interested in it in her lifetime. Before she sold her home and moved into independent living several years ago, I would wait until she was distracted by something when I would visit, then run a hot wash with bleach through her machine which never saw anything but generic liquids and cold water.

I worked for a while in an appliance store right after I was married and the store had its own Maytag man with a shop and office in the back. He taught all of us younger women how to do laundry. I still follow his tips to this day.

Most of what is being cleaned are heirloom type things, old quilt, baby blanket, letterman jacket, etc. I like the premise so far.

As to paying for Discovery plus, I am still in the trial period but will probably continue. I recently cut the cord and cancelled my satellite service. It was over $200 a month as rates kept creeping up. So I signed up for YouTube tv for $65 a month, which covers local channels, most of the news we watch and some sports, plus unlimited DVR capabilities. I can add discovery plus(the commercial free version) for $7 a month, plus HBO max for $12 and I’m covered. I can add all to up to 8 TVs, which I probably will never need but that’s fine. I really enjoy design, gardening, and renovation shows in the background when I’m doing chores so it works for me.

On one of the jackets he was doing, which was a silk jacket, he filled the sink with water and plain soap flakes. Then he pulled it out and was taking a brush to clean one of the patches. It started to bleed the blue onto the white and he said in that case, you go backwards to the previous step, which meant he dunked it back in the sink. It stopped the bleed immediately and was fine. Made me feel a bit more confident about trying some of my delicate stuff that was my mother’s.

sheila, few things that have always stood out that our Maytag man impressed on us were:

Sort! I grew up in a household where an armload of 'whatever' made up a washing machine load. Who knew that similar weight fabrics and colors needed to be sorted into individual loads. Never towels with sheets, blouses, or gasp: lingerie...or that the heavier weight fabrics agitating wet would cause premature wear to those that were lighter or more delicate.

Hot water for sheets. Then, the appropriate temperature for the type of load washing.

(I think my Mom became a cold water gal the minute it began to be suggested it could save energy)

Bargain detergent is rarely a bargain and having bought a good quality product, begin with using about half the amount suggested on the container directions. Open the lid and look, feel. (are you hearing MamaPinky here too ;0)). Detergent companies are in the business of selling product, the more you use, the happier they are. Determine for yourself how much you need to get clothes/loads clean.

I probably still wash more clothes with an additional rinse than not too....(Eta: because residual product of any kind in fabric shortens its life too. I should also have said 'nothing goes into the dryer but wet clothes'. No dryer sheets, and I don't think wool dryer balls were available that decade. I might use a half dryer sheet once or twice a year when drying polar fleece outerwear in winter so it doesn't snap at me when I'm removing it from the dryer)

I’m on episode 4, I am really enjoying it. I finally realized they post little notes at the bottom of the screen to tell you where to find certain products. I think I need a little horsehair brush lol.

Thanks, Morz. I learned to sort laundry fro m mother in the early ‘50s. One friend who left her daughter with us a week every summer was always amazed at how white my whites were and how fresh my laundry smelled.

I don't watch the show. Instead, I get very concerned that he talks about washing everyday clothes on a turbo cycle, in cold water, with "soap flakes" in a High Efficiency machine, with HARD Water. Which are things that I would never even consider doing.

And if I did, knowing what I do, I wouldn't dare shred Ivory Bars and attempt to pass it onto people as "Soap Flakes" for $20, with my name on it. I just have too much of a conscience.

I'm not meaning to be so critical, but I cringe and come close to heart palpitations watching him give such terrible advice. There is a reason "syndex" or "synthetic detergents" came on the scene in the 1940's. And why housewives jumped for joy, and quickly swooned to powder boxes of Tide.

Unfortunately, when the general public sees something on "TV", they generally assume it must be true and verified information. People just don't have a clue what damage he is doing to washers everywhere, or to the textiles.

I honestly hope the show blows over.

Ok, we must be discussing different shows. I have yet to see him use or mention turbo wash, every thing has been in a sink or tub so far. He used warm or hot water multiple times, and he made it clear that his soap flakes were not body soap, saying something about the ph being different for laundry needs. and I saw no mention of anything having a price like the $20 mentioned.

As for my other comments, I simply read one his articles in the Wall Street Journal, while looking at Treasury Yield information for a Mortgage Application. I was completely flabbergasted and shocked at his suggestions, and in general, poor laundry habits. I was than forwarded a article from another news organization (I can't remember which) which carried even worse advice.

My point still stands. There is a reason we use Synthetic Detergents in this country, across the pond, and over the border. Soap, while, seeming harmless, is far inferior to Modern Surfactants.

A search finds further background info and details on his "laundry philosophy." A story in the Chicago Sun-Times goes into some details. Says cold water = no because it requires a longer cycle which causes excess wear on fabrics. Warm water on a short Express cycle is less abrasive. No soaking. Never machine dry, always hang dry. Don't use detergents with unpronounceable ingredients, plant-based is best. Etc.

All laundry questions are directed to youtube. I would ask my mom, who loves doing laundry(weird) but she is not very good at it. I had many favorite clothing items ruined by bleach,which she would fold up and give to me to put away like there was not just a random huge splotch of white on my favorite hot pink dress. 😟 She would say, its clean. Get over it. So....yeah, YouTube it is for me.
