At a very rough guess, I would say some sort of late spring cold damage but need visuals to confirm.

Things started to warm in early mid March when my buds began to open, and then we had temps dropped for several days then rebounded back with our warmer temps again all with in a week.

Will the plants recover on their own or will they struggle this season?

They should recover fine. But flowering for this season can be impacted. Depending on one's location, covering or offering some sort of winter protection might need to be the way to go.
