Additional Laundry Rooms

We are going to be building soon and I am contemplating adding an additional laundry room. We will have our main mud room/laundry room on the first floor, a small laundry set in the master closet (master on first floor). Should we add a set upstairs as well? Even if it is a small set.

The closets are fairly large, so we could either add it to a child’s closet- I was thinking the one in BR 2 (closet is 11x10) or the linen closet in the hall.

Before I would advise you to lose valuable storage space and add the expense of extra plumbing, who will be on the second floor? Obviously you will be spending most of your time on the main level as that is where the master suite is. If you have teens upstairs, will they be willing to come down and bring their dirty laundry and take it back up, or will you be doing that? And if so, will it be a chore going up and down the stairs to do laundry? I am a big believer in saving money wherever it makes sense (as a retired accountant), but I do understand the arguments in terms of time and steps of having more than on LR.

Our kids will be the only ones upstairs. Still small right now, but hopefully in the next few years they will be doing their own laundry.

To add plumbing to our new construction for a laundry room is only $700. So in the grand scheme if that $700 could prevent arguments, well worth it! But is it too many laundry rooms? I don’t want to seem like a laundry mat.

For $700, I would add one. I vowed that if we ever have another two story house, we'd have a laundry upstairs. I have three kids and lugged laundry up and down stairs for 2 years.

I had to do the same during extended visits to my parent's house. Laundry at my parent's would pile around the units, because no one wanted to carry it back up. My two teenage little brothers would leave their stuff, dirty/clean, around the laundry room, piled on the washer, and use the dryer as their dresser. That last one was a parenting issue, and I won't get into that, lol. But just showing some possibilities of dealing with teens.

If the laundry is closer to the bedrooms, it's a win for everyone.

Most people here will tell you you can never have too many laundry rooms. It would also be a selling point as your home plans look like it is a very nice, upscale design. Since the kids are small it will indeed save you steps. I almost fell head first into the wall coming down the stairs carrying the laundry basket in one of my previous homes, so I understand why some say a LR upstairs is a great thing to have.
