Our Pergola is 8x12, seats 6 comfortably and 8 sometime. The footings were poured before construction of the patio. Hope this is helpful.

Glad to hear this was helpful. Our patio is 24x26 with a additional 12x12 space for a hot tub and 5x9 for grilling. We built this DIY more than 20 years ago. I cannot over-emphasize imagining how you will enjoy the space. Consider sunlight, landscaping, utilities (water, electricity and gas) as well as numbers of people you wish to accommodate. We have seats for 15 before needing folding chairs. Good luck.
