planted a hosta - something else emerged

I bought six hostas late last summer at Home Depot, grown at a fairly local nursery for cheap at the end of the season. They were big and in great shape so I couldn’t resist. I don’t recall the variety off of the top of my head, I’ll look at my plant tags from last year and add to my post.

Fast forward to this spring, all of the hostas are coming wonderfully except for one. It seemed to be lagging behind with only one sprout barely poking out for the last few weeks, I thought it just might be the runt of the litter... A few days ago, I noticed it was looking really odd, and today... I fear it was an alien just pretending to be a big beautiful leafy hosta and trying to learn about earth gardens because it’s not a hosta anymore!

In all seriousness, it looks familiar but I don’t have a clue on what it is- what in the world could have happened? Where did my hosta go and what was it swapped with like a body-snatcher?

    Hosta flower stalk

    welcome to the forums ...

there is a very active hosta forum ...

embo is right.. for some reason it went straight to flowering ... it will put out leaves later ...

    ignore them for now ...

i am surprised f your story they were grown locally but sold at big box???

and you say they were big.. but you have only one pip growing .. that might tell me something.. but not right now.. lol .. i wonder if they were hyper fertilized.. and it pout them out of whack somehow ....

varietal name doesnt matter.. a hosta is a hosta is a hosta .. for this purpose ...

if you want to dig it up.. check planting depth.. just to try to figure it out.. now is a perfect time of year to do such .... perhaps it ended up too deep ... the pips should be visible at eh soil surface all winter long ... if you do.. snap a pic or two.. so we can see ... and talk about it.. if you wish ...

    ken

ps: recently watch little shop of horrors ????? ... lol ... you and your alien conspiracy theories...

Thank you both for the insights! The leaves at the bottom were hosta-like so I figured it had to still be trying to impersonate the original plant 😆. In reality it’s a mutant that can’t wait to spread the love of hostas around...

Thanks for the welcome to the forums, I read them often I just haven’t participated yet...

Back to the hosta... I bought it at my local Home Depot, they often have plants from local growers, they call them out with signage much like Whole Foods does with local products sourced from the state or region.

About month and a half ago I bought a huge split-leaf monstera philodendron at the same Home Depot that was grown at a local Kansas grower less than an hour from me, close to Lawrence. I guess not all of them source locally when possible along with the big national brands like Proven Winners, Monrovia and Bonnie.

I will check the planting depth, and keep you posted, but I’m fairly sure it and the rest of them I planted that day, the pips are are just below the mulch. It’s a bit rainy today so it may have to wait until tomorrow.

It’s so weird! The flower stalk is also HUGE! Compared to all of my other hostas that are mature enough to produce flowers... I’ll take another photo with something behind it for scale. It’s seriously a mutant... It’s a thick stalk, not typically what one looks like prior to blooming, and the head is close to the size of a golf ball. I said it was “familiar” but so odd that it’s still blowing my mind.

Wondering if it would help if I contacted the grower to see what type of fertilizer they used or if they have any thoughts on it... I’m curious to watch it grow and change over the course of the season.

It’s a nice rainy day to watch Little Shop of Horrors 😁 I haven’t seen that movie in probably 20+ years, but it’s a gem that’s often in my mind, especially when I’m fertilizing my houseplants - My bigger ones I always say “Feed Me! Seymour!” then comply with an delicious organic treat. In reality I’m a huge sci-fi and pop culture geek and we have a ton of comics and comic-related artwork. Since it’s more of an X-Men plant, I resisted more nerdy comments regarding Poison Ivy (Batman) or the Green or Alec Holland (Swamp Thing).

I’m a weirdo- I love my gardens and landscaping and pop culture and even crazier, hot rods and muscle cars, and rock concerts among other things. I’m a woman of diverse interests! I should change my profile pic to one from a recent comic-con. Haha

Heck, I’ll just post one here for fun - that me and Jason Mamoa. Promoting the release of Aquaman and the other Justice League movies. And yes... He’s that huge, I’m short but not that tiny (5’4”) that I barely reach his shoulder with it dropped down to put his arm around me. I have tons more official backdrop photos like that and casual fun selfies with actors at their individual booths. It’s a bummer I probably won’t get to do that again any time soon...
