100 year old old Carnegie library house to retail

Hello all!
Trying to lighten up this area of shelving in the old library. I can put lights up in the shelves, but they are still dark holes when you want displays to pop.
I would like to display items on these original library shelves.
Just can not paint them, so what are your thoughts onwallpapering the back of the shelves. Able to pull off paper after done and want all wood again?
