Actually, snow IS an insulator.....but you need a bit more than what is showing to do any good :-)

However, if it doesn't drop much below freezing at night, you really don't have too much to worry about. 25F or less - then I would have concerns. Frost and a light snow cover is one thing.....a freeze is something else.

steve..I feel your pain..our poor plants..I didn't cover anything..my plants are flattened..

I covered about 4 dozen hostas and other plants--then I ran out of empty pots, cans, etc. This morning I have 1-2 inches of snow on everything. Tree branches are broken off all over my neighborhood and/or are on the ground. Steve, your Japanese maple looks ok mine has branches bent to the ground covered with heavy wet snow. We didn't get the predicted 4 inches but it's cold. This morning it's 33 and tonight it's going to be in the 20's. My magnolias are trashed. Snow in November/December is festive and picturesque at this point however, it is just destructive. Should have taken more pics of my plants because now I am worried that they will be mush.

the sun is shining..this maple looks better..it's hard to get hosta pics without going out..I'm hoping for the best..at least I have my 7 pots in the garage Lol..

How sad! I am sorry this freaky weather has caused so much sadness. Our temps tonight will be 36, which is unheard of for this time of year. If we get frost, there is nothing I can do because there is far too much to do.

Looking so much better! I won't know until I get home if my snow melted today. Forecast has changed to maybe a bit of snow tonight for me? Temperatures are supposed to drop however. I still have at least 1-3 weeks when I can get a frost. Here's hoping all of our plants survive!

I can't remember a nicer, earlier spring nor colder, snowier days to follow. This is only my 6th spring here, so what do I know?

nw - Has your JM bounced all the way back or is it still a but droopy. I assume you'll just let nature take its course, but would it help to stake it back up for a little while?

steve..my JM is close to normal..it's still wet and a little droopy..I'm not doing any staking..

as for hostas..it sounds lazy but as we've said..covering can be problematic..what to use?..when to uncover?..covers smash plants etc..so I went with doing nothing..could be ok?..or could be a disaster?..we'll see..

We had a soft, fluffy snow and it melted pretty quick. I covered some but not all for the lower temperature for the last two nights. I am crossing my fingers that they will be okay. I am think of the positive side with that the snow is moisture. I have been telling myself that I should wait for bedding plants, I was right. But somehow being right is little comfort.

My whole post just went poof!! So I will be briefer. It hailed and snowed here, temps dipped to 32 last night but only for a few hours. I covered as many as I could but not like last year when the frost was in May and so many were leafed out. Many that just have their pips at ground level, I covered with leaves only.
