Help with lighting please..

I just changed the hardware on my kitchen cabinets from lightweight brushed nickel to these more substantial black handles. I prefer the look as they balance out my dark countertops. Now I want to change my lighting. I have decided on pendant lighting for over the island. I am debating between the two styles I’m attaching. Opinions please? I’m leaning towards the black pendants versus the glass ones as I feel the glass is not heavy enough, but then wonder if I actually need to lighten the space versus add weight? Also, any thoughts on what I should do over the table would be great!

I think some of your pictures didn't post. You can add them in a comment.

That is very strange because I can see them all. Did any of them post?

Can you post photos of the rest of the room where the table is? It could influence style of light over table.

Here you go CH. The table is right next to my sliding door. Meanwhile, can you see the other four pics posted above? Cawaps says they didn’t post properly but I can see them. I’m going to repost in the comments just in case.

Here are the pics again if they didn’t post properly.

Yes, I can see all your photos. I actually don't like either of your pendant ideas. I think the black ones are too "heavy" and, with your table and now all the cabinet hardware, I think you would be getting too much black especially since you don't seem to have a lot of natural light. As for your second choice, personally, I don't like hanging lights where you can see the bulbs, especially the so-called Edison bulbs. They hurt my eyes when I look at them and its hard for the design and style of the light fixture to be seen with the brightness of the bulbs. For something over your table, I would suggest brushed nickel since I believe your appliances are stainless steel. It needs to be hung much lower than your current one. Goggle "correct height for light over table" and you will find some diagrams and calculations for getting it at the right height. Depending on what price point you are looking at, I have bought what I think are attractive casual lights at Home Depot and Lowe's. For something higher end, or just to get ideas, I love Lamps Plus. They have a huge selection at their website and have free return. By the way, your cabinets are beautiful. I love the way they flow into your dining area. I'll bet having all that storage is wonderful! Do you need all six chairs at your table? If not, storing two some place else would make it feel a little more open.

I only see one pic that shows the dining table. (and your inspiration pics. )

where are your pendants going to be hung?

these work a little better and have the warm tones to play off your wood, as well as the dark color

I don't care for your choices with your space. They seem a bit too modern w/your style kitchen.

since you have this metal and glass table, I think something like these might work better.

    a gold and black

any chance of doing a rug under your table?

Thanks Beth for your ideas! I did not think to incorporate gold tones into the lighting. Because my hardware is black and my appliances are stainless steel, I thought that would be too much. But I do like the round pendant light over the table in your photo that has the gold. Also, yes, I am thinking about a rug. I noticed that you post pictures of both ivory and black. Which do you think would be better?

Beth...I thought about the pendants for over the island.

CEH4041..Yes, all of the storage is wonderful. I am not sure I want to stick with brushed nickel for the lighting. Yes, my appliances are stainless steel but I have brushed nickel right now, albeit a style I do not like, and I am not fond of it. I used to have brushed nickel hardware on the cabinets which is why I chose the brushed nickel for the lighting. It’s funny, a few of my friends think that my cabinets are a little too traditional and want me to paint them white. I think that they are classic and I’m going to keep them! I have 50 cabinet doors and that would be a lot of white!!! BTW...Because the patio doors are right next to the kitchen table, sometimes I have too much light and heat in the kitchen!

CEH4041...I agree, I think, about the visible bulbs...

I agree with you: classic is great! Personally, I think that painting one's cabinets white is a bit of a fad and eventually will "date" a kitchen. Beautiful wood like yours is forever. I understand your reluctance on the brushed nickel. Let me see if I can come up with some others ideas for you.

What are the dimensions of your table?

    40x70

Beth...you think that these are too modern for over the island? I think they are very classic—almost ‘farmhouse’...

I still don’t see a photo of your island?

oh, sorry rebecca, I was looking at the other ones.

these are really pretty, but I just don't see them working w/your kitchen.

the other farmhouse style would work

I like the textured rug w/the ivory,,,or one w/ivory and black. either will work.

and it's perfectly fine to bring in a little gold w/the light. your wood is very warm so it will play off of it.

    You tell me

    I really like this pendant

https://www.lampsplus.com/sfp/54A29/ and they have some other black ones you might like

Thanks Beth! I think you’ve convinced me against glass globes. I prefer the solid black over the island. Unfortunately, we only have one electrical box and my husband does not want to install two more. So, whatever we put up there, has to hang from base of some sort I guess. As for over the table, I like the middle one!

What would you think of this? I’m not sure how to cut and paste it over my island like you, Beth...!

well, I haven't figured out how to turn them!

I'm not sure. It's diff. kind of echoes the chairs. what would you do over the table?

    something similar?

do you like this style? for over the table you could do one, large black pendant

the single one is 18" Felton, wide pendant

    is this to industrial?

    or, something more modern?

what about this one? you can have the glass too.

    https://www.lampsplus.com/products/kichler-moorgate-36-inch-wide-black-kitchen-island-light-pendant__42r98.html

    table lights

this one will work w/the SS and black. no gold. Kichler Titus. and it's 25", so should work for your table

he doesn't want to piggy back off the center hole and make two other ones? wouldn't take more than an hour to do.

this way you could have 3 separate pendants. I like the black and brass options.

Of the options presenter, I like the following.... picks up the black but is not heavy like the other black pendants. They have similar style but not too matchy matchy. My only question is if the island light is too wide for the island? Check measurements to be sure it won’t be too large

Hey Mamaham and Beth...thanks for all of the feedback! No, hubby doesn’t want to start cutting holes in the ceiling for three pendants, so it limits me a bit. I do like the look of the one with the three black shades. I think the weight of the black is needed. It seems the more glass showing, the less balanced it seems (does that make sense?). So I do like this one. (I don’t know to interject pics between different text in one comment like Beth so I’m going to have to add additional comments. Lol)

I’m not sure what to do over the table though if I go with the three black ones. Beth, you did a matching pendant but I think it’s too heavy over the glass table. I’m still contemplating the five ‘spirals’...too bad we can’t photoshop them turned in the right direction, but it gives me a good idea. I might order both and see which i prefer. If I go with the spirals over the island, do you think the spiral single that Mamaham shows would be overkill over the table? Too much ‘whimsy’? Here is another one I just found for over the island. If the colour matches (hard to tell), what do you think of this...

PS...what app do you use, Beth, to superimpose?

So...I figured out how to superimpose. If the colour is a match (in my edit it doesn’t appear to be), how do you like this?

    last modified: 5 years ago

@rebecca how do you superimpose? I agree it’s heavy and puts a barrier over the island. If you pick something with spaces in between the lights, it will keep the area open and therefore feel bigger.

Mamaham...I just downloaded an app and am trying to figure it out...

do either of you have a Mac?

No Mac here. Just an iPad

don't know how to do it on that!

    Yes I have a Mac

So...I’ve done a really crude superimposition of two pendant lights over my island. Which do you prefer?

I like both. first one seems a bit more modern, 2nd, maybe more industrial. Personal choice.

Well, my worry is that the globe one might look too cheap.

If you forced me to choose, I'd pick #2
