Did the same thing to my mandaring (didn't occur to me that the nursery had it under a shade tent, so when I put it sraight out in the sun... Oof). It is now putting out leafs buds a month or two later, but *not* on any of the blackened limbs. I did trim back the limbs bit by bit until I hit live sections, but so far doesn't seem to have helped 🤷 maybe the buds themselves are too scorched on those limbs?

i dont understand how long ago this all happened ... but it could take months to recover ...

and in the meantime .. just water properly ..

never put a fresh transplant into sun.. until its roots have time to settle in. and start pumping water .. and then gradually move it into more sun.. its called 'hardening off' to the new situational variable ...

the black stuff is probably dead.. and will need to be pruned off .. but we will make that decision in a couple months ...

always keep in mind.. it will always be a tree .. and you need to treat it as such .. even if you pot it.. or try to grow it as a houseplant ...

I use an umbrella to control the amount of sun. Painting the trunk white would help. Even cactus need a long period to adjust from greenhouse to full sun. Nurseries typically use shade cloth if heat is an issue.

Be aware of the root temperature. These are beautiful planters but they heat up in direct sun and have to be used in the shade. Wood barrels can heat up in direct sun as well. The damage might be from overheated roots as well.
