Scab Resistant Pear Tree Recommendations?

5 years ago

Hi all,

We have a large pear tree that is heavily affected by pear scab each year (I'm not sure of the variety). We are thinking of cutting it down and planting a different variety. Do you know if there are any good varieties which are resistant to pear scab and will pollinate a Bartlett pear tree?

Thank you.

    If in US check USDA Cooperative Extension Service web site for your state. These usually have region specific recommendations for home fruit growing including cultivar selection.

    Unfortunately, there is no such thing. All cultivars are susceptible to some degree or another, some are just much more highly susceptible than others. If you want scab-free pears, you will need to spray.

    The USDA ARS grows many varieties of pears, and also most fruit and vegetables. The pears are grown at Corvallis OR. There's a web site that you can either use to find what they have or to peruse there wealth of accumulated data about many varieties. I searched on "pear scab" and came up with a list of 47 varieties. They rate scab on a scale of 1-9 where 1 is the lowest.

    To find the info click on advanced search and check "All including Historic" otherwise you won't get any returns as pears are not available this time of year. Enter pear scab and click search. To see all of the items found click on "Show 10 rows" and select All. To see an item click on the PI number for Arganche which I pick because I went thru the items returned and have some suggestions later.

    To see all of the info available for this pear click on "Observation" and then on Show 5 rows and then select "All". Scab is near the top. It's my guess that they have multiple trees and this one shows all five have a scab rating of 1. The minimum. I also looked at flavor and quality to eliminate the ones that say poor or bland. They don't rate many fruit varieties really high. You might use a pear you like and check their opinion of it to get a reading on their ratings.

    The other pears you might want to look at are"

    * Mustabay

    Zaharoasa de Vara

    * Ubileen

    Pitmaston Duchess

    Manning Miller

    Chojuro

    There's lots of other qualities that I didn't look at including the only known place to find the "stem length" on any fruit. If you do a search with a spelling error they won't have that variety. I couldn't understand why they don't have a single MacIntosh apple. I'm not presenting the site as a source; but rather a source of info.
