Can't your neighbor tell you what plants she gave you? And when you look at her garden do you see that she's given you starts from plants that tend to be real thugs. As an experienced gardener, I see all the time that most plants that show up for sale/give away by the local garden club are plants that are taking over their gardens.

under normal situations, I would totally agree with you. What you say makes total sense. However, this particular neighbor moved away a long time ago and rented out their house. She has now decided to sell it as a tear down. So she offered me any plants in her backyard. It‘s very over grown. My other neighbor and I went over and dig up anything that was flowering and easy to identify. Then we dug up some that looked like plants but not sure exactly. Hence, the mystery....

Mamaham, none of the plants we suggested as ID's are garden thugs. Oenothera fruticosa will make a larger clump each year, but it doesn't send out rhizomes into nearby plants, same with Echinacea. I think the Salvia would be an annual there. It probably self seeded in your neighbor's garden. The Salvia needs a long growing season. It never flowered for me last year in zone 6a/5b. I have much better luck with Salvia coccinea. It's great news that you and your friend rescued some plants that were doomed to be bulldozed!

@Jay 6a Chicago thank you! Yes, I wish I could rescue more. I’m sure there are seedlings that someone more experienced would recognize. I plan to go over every few days and see if anything else is blooming. There are tons of daffodils but I don’t have space for them all. Just got a sampling.

there is a large beautiful azalea and some smaller azaleas. I’m trying to figure out if I can transport them And if I have the space to put them somewhere.
