Probably for a few years. When we bought our house there was a maple in the front yard slightly bigger than yours. It had significant damage to the trunk possible caused by a deer. That was 10 years ago during the period the tree started to heal, but last year the top branches started to die. We finally took it out.

Even though it was significantly damaged it had pretty red leaves in the fall. so we hated to give up on it.

And to give the healthy one its best chance, remove the grass around the tree in at least a 3 ft diameter and mulch lightly--not a mound up against the trunk. Also make sure you have planted it so that the root flare is exposed.

they are cheap at that size.. if you cant het another one free ... why spend the rest of your life owndering ...

it looks telephone poled.... planted too deep.. pull back the soil and find out where the root flare is ... if deep.. this is the major reason.. for the issues.. other than junior of course ...

move them in dormancy .. without leaves.. and the job becomes much easier.. besides.. you can see fall color when you buy it ...

ps: thats a lot of maple close together.. when they are 50 to 60 feet tall ... you may eventually have a hard time growing grass under them by then ...

With that much bark damage, I'm doubtful about its survival. What's certain is that it will spend some time healing while its pair is growing. If you have fast growing trees, the healthy one will outsrip the other

It might sprout from the bottom.

Cut the trunk off at ground level and it most certainly sprout from the bottom.
