prune or not? sprouts

Many sprouts on Pagoda dogwood and others, up to 3' tall. Cass Turnbull says leave alone, others say cut them off.

Cass Turnbull is the Plant Amnesty author. My zone is 5B near Sun Valley ID. I'll be darned if I can find a way to post a photo. The advice I found here for photo posting is nine years old. In the meantime, in general, maybe you can tell me what to do with water sprouts from tree/shrub branches going straight up. Prune them to the branch? I will continue to look for how to post photo. Thanks for your reply. I used to use GardenWeb several years ago and got lots of useful information.

Pagoda dogwood likes to put out base sprouts. If you like, you can certainly cut those at the base, careful not to damage the main trunk.
