I'm not sure what is going on with light above hood and all the lights in the soffits but if you get an electrician out to replace fixtures and bulk head i would think about removing or changing those. also under cabinet lighting would be a good idea. is your style more modern? is your hardware dark? do you need a fan or will a fixture do in family room?

Thanks Jennifer. I appreciate your help. My hardware is a satin nickel. I like classic or transitional...not totally modern, but we are slowly updating all the orange oak to white and medium brown oak floors. Agree on under cabinet lighting! We have some installed which work great, but the wires are black. So, you can see them when sitting at the table. My husband likes the fan option in the family room, but we hardly use it. (I’m also thinking of painting the fireplace and mantle white, if that makes a difference...)

do not paint your fireplace, rather unite the space with lightings. if you pull a little bronze into space it will create some balance. it will also let the lights have some presence without having to be huge. right now you can tell you never use the fan. Buy a nice table or floor fan. put a flush mount in the living room or add more cans. Let the beams in there show off.

also, remove the bulb from your can that falls over the oven hood it's not doing anything but creating a hot spot.
