I'm sorry but this is not a new story (new to you...yes I get that and I'm sorry this has happened to you). The most significant damage to kitchen flooring comes from fridges with water lines AND dishwashers. Yes. A fridge like yours comes in AHEAD of a plumbing issue to the sink!

First thing first. Turn off water to the fridge (hopefully someone was smart and put a tap on this darling). Let the fridge thaw out (usually means turning off, removing the food) and then pull it out to inspect the damage.

While the fridge thaws, you will need to be there to monitor it 24/7. While you are waiting for it to thaw, you will call your home insurance company to come out and investigate.

When you choose your next fridge, leave the 'water/ice maker' option on the shelf. Nope...Not kidding. And just in case you are wondering about the age of the fridge, the average length of time a new appliance lasts = 7 years. That does not include the 3 repairs you will attempt/pay for in that time frame.

Everyday you wait to start remediation is another day mold and water damage takes over. You posted this yesterday but how long ago did the house cleaner bring it to your attention and I would have to assume it did not start the moment she brought the matter to you.?

Water leaking inside and/or from outside of a refrigerator can come from an ice maker or drinking water dispenser supply/system. Several possible causes. The inlet valve for the ice maker or water dispenser may not fully shut off resulting in a drip or even a dribble. The water dispenser spout would obviously drip or dribble which can be directly seen. Ice makers are sometimes obscured from direct view behind storage bins so the drip or dribble may not be noticed until enough water collects to be seen in the floor of the freezer or otherwise running out from somewhere. Or a line that runs from the water valve at the back/bottom of the unit to the ice maker or water dispenser may crack and leak directly on the floor. This is common with aging on models with door water dispensers being that the line typically runs into the door through a hinge and is subject to movement when the door opens/closes.

Or from a clogged defrost condensate drain. Defrost condensate overflows from the clogged drain in the freezer section and pools/freezes on the floor of the freezer. It may run out on the floor if the volume is enough. The condensate normally runs through the drain to a collection pan under the unit where heat from the compressor evaporates it.

Turning off the water supply to the unit will stop ice maker / water dispenser leaks. It will not stop defrost condensate leaks.

I am so sorry this is happening to you. I just want to urge you to take care of this ASAP by a professional mold remediation company. 3 years ago my daughter went from a normal, happy, energetic 3rd grader, to a shadow of her former self. Extreme joint paint, memory loss, headaches, brain fog, lethargy, cognitive decline, hot/cold flashes, and stomach issues just to name a few. At one point I had to help her out of bed in the mornings, help her get dressed, and even tie her shoes. They had to get a scribe for her at school since she couldn’t hold a pencil. It was an awful scary time and took countless doctors and TWO YEARS to get a diagnosis after they tested her urine for mold. Only 20-25% of humans are “allergic” to mold, but if you are, it‘s a long road to recovery and detox. I don’t how many people are in your family, but at least you’ll be aware if anyone comes down with strange symptom. Good luck! I was just telling our contractor about doing “extra” waterproofing in the bathroom, but this gives me something else to discuss with him. I never would have thought about a failing ice maker/water dispenser line!

I have the same symptoms to a T and i am 41. life is so bad I can‘t wake up, think clearly, or make it through half a day. survival is barely possible. I can‘t afford to get help bc I make too much and my husband is a disabled VET, so I support us both. I support my father and soon my mother and I need an avenue but I can’t find one. The entire house needs to be demolitioned. I am a heath care provider myself and I have so many more years I can help folks, I just fear my body wont make it.

@HU-465414275 I am so so sorry. My daughter is still not well. Are you a homeowner or renting? Your homeowner’s insurance should cover mold remediation. If renting, your landlord has to fix it.
