Match the white of the cabinets for the ceiling color. Just use a matte/flat finish.

agree, do a bright white ceiling.

as for the trim color, try Simply White. I'd use it on the walls too. Simply white is a warmer neutral without the obvious yellow undertones.

I have basically the same kitchen materials that you do. I used Simply White trim (baseboard/crown,casing) and also used it on my walls. (I tried White Dove first and it was too dingy looking)

in my pantry area/coffee bar area, I used BM Light Pewter. (simply white trim)

I have Alabaster on walls, matte/flat finish and bright white trim in semi gloss. We love it. Much depends on your light and the "actual" white of your cabinets installed. Your lighting will impact these choices a lot as well. LED at 3-4,000 is just about right if you are using LEDs.

@Beth H. :I think I have to use Sherwin Williams paint as stated in the contract :/ Is there a BM Simply White equivalent in Sherwin Williams paint? I got samples for Greek Villa, Pure White, and Origami White but none of them looked good in my house.

You can see SW Pure White is closest to BM Simply White. SW Alabaster will work with SW Pure White because their chroma levels are more than .22 apart.

That’s why the other colors you tried didn’t work.

Personally, I like cleaner white trim so with Alabaster walls I use SW Extra White. The chroma difference is .34. Probably work better with white cabinets too but impossible to tell because we don’t know what the actual DNA is if the cabinets.

Just use the ceiling white for your ceiling. I wouldn't put any of the other whites up there. the ceilings always come off differently, so use a bright white.

They say Alabaster is similar to BM White Dove.

Stay away from greek villa or any of those other yellow, off-whites. These are very warm undertones:

How about Snowbound? (you can really see how yellow alabaster looks)

those look good together flo. but you can see the yellow undertones. She's putting this next to bright white cabs. I'm just afraid the walls will look too yellow next to the cabinets. Elsewhere in the room it would be fine, depending on her furnishings and lighting.

Thanks @Beth H. :! I tried Pure White and it looks a bit blue in my house. I have not tried Snowbound but I'll check it out! I do want the house to look like a bright/airy white without looking stark so I wanted to use Alabaster which is a tad warmer but I'm just afraid it'll look too warm/yellow.

I thought that too, until I used it! I think it is dependent on the lighting. We have big bright light with high windows and west/east exposures, so it always depends on the light. Both natural and artificial.

Actually, the subtle impact of the higher chroma (think grayed) influences the tones in Alabaster. At least that is my experience. I always use flat or matte finish on walls and ceiling and then depending on the "wear" factor, use semi-gloss or satin finish on trim.

I think it looks great but I am afraid Alabaster will look yellow next to the bright white cabinets but I agree - I can always use different light temperature to make it look less warm! Also I'm totally open to other Sherwin Williams white paint if anyone has other suggestions. I'll also ask if I could potentially use BM paints and try Simply White but if it's very similar to Pure White, it might not work in my house cause Pure White looks blue. Simply White may not though as it has yellow undertones.

Not sure if this makes a difference or not but the contract says the walls will be a satin finish? Do you think that reflectiveness would make it look brighter?

I'm sure they can go buy a few gallons of BM paint! Or offer to buy it yourself. it's your home! Why should you have to be inconvenienced to find a matching paint color just so they can use SW?? Tell them you want the BM color for this room (s) It really isn't a big deal.

And you shouldn't have to use a 5000K bulb to get your wall paint color to look less yellow.

Pure White and Simply White are not similar. If it looks blue, then you probably have bluer light coming in through that window. (is it a east or north facing window?

Ceiling is flat.

use a bright white ceiling paint, not the wall color white (on ceiling). ceilings are always going to appear darker because of shadows. use the ceiling paint they already make.

trim is usually a semi gloss, but you could opt for satin. I like semi. personal choice

Sorry bout that! but no, same answer. with mine, i used the standard bright white ceiling paint in flat/matte finish. and it still looks darker than the wall paint!

look at my last picture above. w/natural room lighting. ceilings are going to throw off more shadows and diff colors. just stick with a bright white. (i've actually used just the white base straight from the can, no tint added. did it w/my trim too. )

To Flo Mangan @Flo Mangan I’m interested in your textured Alabaster walls. I know that light will change colors but will textured walls do the same or more? I have never seen a textured wall in the north east but that’s all I have seen in FL. I could deal with a textured wall but my husband is a perfect level 5 guy. Thank you

Texture doesn’t change color but it does create some shading depending on how heavy the texturing is. It’s not a big factor though. “Finish” has more impact. A flat or matte finish is the best for that reason. Any sheen creates a more reflective surface.
