Sorry to be responding late, did not see it until today. Figs get much bigger than the one you have. Age should not be a problem. If given too much fertilizer they can grow and not produce much. Planting a fig in a good, open area with plenty of water and fertilizer will encourage fig tree to grow and not produce fruit. Some varieties take a while to start fruiting. When in a container the roots are restricted and puts stress on the fig bush, and it will start producing figs. Keep fig well watered but cut back on fertilizer.

If that doesn't work put a couple of cuttings in a 5 gallon bucket with potting mix. They should start producing figs in the second year. Figs producer faster in containers than they do in the ground. They will need frequent small amounts of fertilizer and are a pain to keep watered. But they will produce figs.

Thank you for responding. Once again, gardening is an opportunity to learn patience. Since I first posted this question, the bush in question has produced several figs. I may be watering too often, but now the chance for patience is waiting for them to ripen!
