Need some Kitchen Lighting Layout Feedback

Good Evening,

We are adding recessed lighting into our kitchen. We currently have 2 hanging fixtures and 1 6" recessed light above the sink. I've attached a picture of what I plan on doing but would appreciate some feedback. Rooms is ~22' x 13' and has 9' ceilings. Cabinets have 18" from top to the ceiling.

I guess my first question is why not cabinets to the ceiling in 9’. Who designed the kitchen ? That is the person who should be helping with this .What are the 2 colors for . I never like 6” pots anywhere so IMO all 4" max and all bulbs 4000K .This IMO is a good layout and under cabinet lighting on a separate switch is IMO better than a dimmer on the overall lighting

Colors were 6” vs 4”. We inherited the kitchen. We do intend on under cabinet and above cabinet lighting in addition to the recessed lighting. The kitchen lacks a lot of natural light so we would rather over light it and dim vs under light it. We had considered all 4” so that is good feedback. You would recommend under cabinet vs ceiling task lighting for counter spaces?

No don't follow that advice and that example plan isn't good. And the color should depend not only on how warm/cool you prefer light, but also the finishes and how close other room's lighting comes to the kitchen, e.g. you don't really want "bluer" lighting of 4000K with honey brown tones or mix 5000K next to 2700K lamps.

4" (or 6") when placed correctly will light both the counters and wash the floor, without focusing your attention to the floor where it shouldn't be in a kitchen. The undercabinet lighting is strictly to compensate for backsplash (if desired) and shadowed counter under the uppers, not be a replacement for ceiling lighting.

Don't mix the 6" and the 4" in the same room, it will look off. I have 4" cans everywhere in our addition...10' ceiling, 9' tray and it's plenty of light! Husband used to complain in our old kitchen that we never had enough light, these babies are bright! I have some 6" cans left in other rooms because we didn't want to redo/texture the ceiling...they seem SO huge. And yes, under cabinet lighting is a must!

So we’ll stick with 4” cans. I was leaning that way, but good to hear from everyone. Any recommendations on light placement other than what is depicted?

I'd say what you have layed out is pretty good, except you have too many additionals lighting adjacent floor spaces. I'd agree with the can over the stove considering you have an OTR instead of hood, and a 2-light island pendant will almost always be on. I assume you'll choose a table chandelier with a 4 or 5 light fixture. All 4" recessed cans works out to about 32"-48" spacing.

In RED if you choose pantry cabs flanking the refrigerator then those lights can move out. Also you can maybe reduce the number of lights in front of the pantry if the pantry is interior lighted.
