Go with a large bold colorful piece of art on your back dining wall and thread your choice of color in placemats, throw pillow and area rug..all portable items that go with you

how about less brown an more bright colors which helps the natural lighting to enter the rooms atleast expand the fireplace .

Navy blue would be good with your sofa. Not too bold, but gives you a lot of contrast.

Your sectional is eating space and light. I'd try the chaise in the bedroom. Place the large sofa perpendicular to the FP and facing the dining room. Put the armless love straight out from the double doors which would angle it toward the FP. Color via art in the dining room, and pulling it through the space with fabric items should do it. If you are able to replace the dark draperies with linen-look lighter ones it will help. If you are allowed to move the rods, hang drapes at ceiling height and so just the side window frames are covered to lighten up even more.

I am going to suggest you step out of the monochromatic box and try RED! I think it would work with the sectional and the wall color. Find a SMALL patterned curtain to hang so it is not just a stripe of color running down the wall. Choose some red pillows for the furniture and some red for the dining room table. NICE big piece of art or a mirror on the dining room wall that is opposite the living area.

Before getting to colours, the back of the sofa is intimidating. Any chance of a low table or console there?

Almost anything goes with gold, it's virtually a neutral. I would suggest turquoise -- but perhaps make the curtains neutral -- a lighter gold. Turquoise in various depths (one or two patterned with gold/beigeif you can get them) for the cushions, pick it up in the art. Smokey blue would also work, and keep you closer to a monochrome feel because it offers less contrast, being near-neutral itself.

I know the sectional is too large for this space.....I had the large sofa by the window and the armless sofa and chaise together right across from it but I recently changed the layout.

Abbijean, it's funny you mentioned the color red because I just purchased a red table runner for my dining room table. Here's a picture....

Now if I could find some throw pillows with the same color and pattern......

I would suggest a plum or eggplant - with maybe a splash of green... Just a thought.

For a "pop" go across the color wheel and look at purples (violets, et al) I found this palette online and it should work with your existing colors. You can do "shades" of the purple (lighter, darker) and with some charcoal and black added in should look very sophisticated.

Rina, I also like the idea of using turquoise and I agree about the curtains. These burgundy ones I have up now,they're pretty thick and make the place darker. On a sunny day, I get the afternoon light (around noon).

Since you like monochromatic....and the walls are gold and you have a lot of browns...how bout a contemporary golden pear for the dining room:

Terracegallery, the pics of my sectional do not show it's real color well( probably due to lack of light outside). It's a really cool beige with a grayish tone and it's not brown at all. ;)
