My first thought is you should have more features in place to mitigate the trip hazard besides a change in floor orientation. Looks very dangerous to me. Personally I’d move some furniture into that area to make the elevation very obvious.

What furniture do you suggest be moved?

I didn‘t have any particular pieces in mind to move. I may have stated my idea poorly. If if were my house, I think I’d have some low bookcases along the step, on the lower side, so there’s only a small area at which to step down. Or tall plants, or a couch, etc. I’ll see if I can find a picture.

I would just worry that when someone comes into your house, talking with you and looking at you, they’re not going to see that step down.

I would work with a dark chocolate nosing on the edges. A colour that matches your leather chairs. That would be enough visual cue to tell people to pay attention AND it would add some interest to beige on beige on beige...and it would add a second place where the chocolate is duplicated. Any time you use a colour in a second or third item you have a 'design concept'....super simple isn't it? No. I know it's not...but there are little tricks you can use to make it LOOK like you used a designer.

I would do a herringbone pattern with frame. I found work in progress pictures online of what I would do if my home. Not great picture but I think it would look good in your foyer. Jmo

I like the half wall idea ...perhaps extending out the same distance of the staircase...this will give you much more useable space for seating as well

A small wall on the other side to extend past the chest will leave a comfortable entry opening

This handy spot to drop thing will create a big foyer area...with room for a wall bench....or console table to temporarily drop things at the entry

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I’ll look into all of them. I’m pretty sure we won’t add a 1/2 wall, I’m honestly not a fan of it 😞.

It is hard to understand from the pics why the raised area was even included...?..it seems there are two tripping hazards ?..perhaps it would help to run the flooring a different direction in the entryway?..or add a border of a different material?...or a different color of the same flooring?..

I think something is called for and that the wall may be overkill...

We tried to see if we could run our LVP in a herringbone pattern and we can’t do it, it just doesn’t interlock that way. We tried to see what running the floor horizontally would look like, thoughts? Does it blend too much with the rest of the floors and not enough of a noticeable change?

Another option we were thinking about is using a totally different flooring. Maybe something like these?

The layout looks good... but it does need contrasting border to accentuate the step up/ down...a narrow trim matching the white door.. trim ....bannister?
