I live in a cheap ranch house built in 1978. It is full of junk and dirty and falling apart. But the kitchen definitely needs new flooring. There is some kind of sheet vinyl that, over the years, has gotten gouges in it so I figure we will replace with new sheet vinyl. I am hoping that we can lay the new flooring over the existing, so as to avoid discovering that we may have asbestos in our current flooring.

Sorry, I went off topic there. The real point of my question is that, on one side of the kitchen we have cheap light wood-look laminate flooring throughout most of the house. On the other side of the kitchen (a room facing our pool), we have nonslip gray large square tile.

How weird is it going to look if we put something completely different in the kitchen, in between those two very different flooring types? I’m thinking of finding a sheet vinyl that is light enough in color to see spills, but dark enough to not show every bit of dirt , and as plain-patterned as possible. Is it ill-advised to put something completely different in there, and should I be looking for a vinyl sheet that is more consistent with one of the two floorings we already have in the rest of the house?
